Is is necessary to buy special steeple spikes? Is there a real advantage or are normal spikes good enough? I am debating whether or not to look for some steeple spikes.

adidas makes good steeple spikes...i have never run w/o them so i don't know how necessary they are but i know they are light and don't hold any water so they seem to work great for me.
Yo, dude, I just got the new Asics. They are the mad bomb shit yo. They got 4 permanant small spikes for the barriers. Wow, they are soooooo hot. I saw them and I was like "Oh Oh Oh." By the way they're bright orange. What can be as cool as bright orange besides the old Jisaris? Pink and yellow baby!
Not mandatory, but it helps. Lets all the water drain out of your shoe so that you don't make that squishing sound every stride. Easier to sneak up on guys in a race when you aren't going squish, squish.
I'll put it to you this way. They are the same exact spikes as their distance cousins except that they have holes or mesh in them. So if you might ever run a steeple you have nothing to lose by buying steeple spikes.
The best non-steeple steeple spikes are the Jasaris. They are all mesh, which is really the important thing.
I just wear a pair of old kennedys with holes in the side and that works wonders
I wore some Ventelus's that I used 1 track season ago and in XC. I ran in the low 9's my first time out and I felt okay in them. I also don't know if those adidas work any better, they seem to have less mesh. However they do have a heel landing support which could be benificial if you race a lot or land hard.
I personally haven't made up my mind, but think that shoes depend on how good you are at hurdling and how you take the pit.
I would definitely get steeple spikes if you plan on running the steeple often. I also ran some 1500's and open 3000's in them and they were just fine. I ran in regular spikes my first couple steeples and after i switched I noticed a huge difference. They drain water so fast. I had two pair of adidas in my day. One was white/orange/black, those were my favorites. The others were purple and pinkish. They both were good.
