No one cares what you think. It's not normal for an athlete to refuse to talk about his competitor, therefore it is worthy of reporting.

Guys, it’s pretty obvious what happened. Coleman asked him “man-to-man-off-camera” not to mention Lyles.
Gault violated that when he wrote this in his article.
I was at Stanford track on Saturday. I heard a photographer ask Genzebe in between warm ups if she was going to visit San Francisco. Track is a small sport.
As a reader, I enjoy the drama and no doubt it drives clicks, but Jon and Brojos: remember that the relationship with athletes is symbiotic.

Not normal but becoming more common. Somehow they are stupid enough to believe that dissing the media works in their favor.
Meanwhile the guys on the other end just want cooperation and a few good quotes. Give them that and the story writes itself. When you don't give them that then you enable and essentially sponsor all the words and speculation that can only work against you.
A fantastic litmus test is opinion of the media. That's why so many simplistic angry American males flunk so badly. They are conditioned toward fear so adding the media to the list is just another accomplishment in their fragile life.
Coleman is a child.

Exactly. I like drama too. But if Gault keeps burning sources, someday nobody will be left to talk to him. His articles become meaningless when that happens.
How long ago was it that rupp started refusing to take interviews after lrc interviewed him in a hostile manner? 6 or 7 years ago? Wouldn't it have been better to have interviews from him, love NOP or hate them?

Never? He's done countless interviews with LRC since then.

Clearly you do care. It must be eating you up if you felt compelled to post that.

I already agreed with that. But I also pointed out that Gault claims he told him that before the interview started. It was against journalistic ethics to then report that. Coleman is right to be upset he reported something that Gault told us was said before the interview started. If it was said during the interview, that would be different.
What aren't you understanding about this Mr Gault? There are some things that aren't for public consumption. Just because you desire conflict and drama it doesn't mean its a good thing. He's a professional athlete who needs to be completely focused on the things in front of him that he can control for optimal performance. He doesn't need distractions. He doesn't owe your curiosity a damn thing. Believe it or not most athletes are trying to reinforce good vibes and FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS. When horseflies land on their faces they get annoyed. So when they swat you away, just accept it and move on. It's easy to do.
I'm 100% in Christian Coleman's corner. I'm 100% in Sammy Watson's corner.
Leave the teenagers alone.
Quit trying to create gratuitous drama.
Agree. Here is the key sentence that people have not commented on:
I think Lyles vs Coleman could be one of the best rivalries in the sport.
So, the idea is that because you want this to be a big rivalry, you write the story to make it happen.

This sums up modern day sports journalism. Instead of writing about the sport they want to focus on click bait. Who could forget Gault’s conspiracy article about Dave Torrence.
Not sure why people think Coleman owes LR something.

I could have something to do with his admiration for Gatlin and the Johnson's disdain for Gatlin.

He literally missed the men’s pole vault, an event 95% of us could give a flying fvck about. Exaggerate much?
Hey when you are paid to cover an event. You cover the event.
Is anybody actually surprised by an athlete not wanting to talk to LRC? LRC should do some introspection & try to figure out why so many athletes don't want to be associated with them. You're not going to be the voice of T&F in the US if athletes keep not wanting to speak to you. Maybe address why. For Coleman, it's probably the 'article' about him & Lyles. But it could also be a number of things -- how you treat other athletes, women, people of color, etc. You would think the Watson stuff & now this would have you look to identify areas of improvement but you really get defensive when folks call out your faults. LRC does a lot of stuff well, you should take lessons away from stuff like this & find ways to do better in the future. But you'll just keep putting out your message that really only speaks to one audience, keep defending bad positions, not control hurtful language on your boards, and keep running into the same problems.
^^^^
Does anyone here really have to ask why an athlete doesn't want to talk to Gault or Brojos?
Besides losing his trust in Gault, Coleman probably doesn't want to pander to anyone, let alone the LRC guys.
He can and does get more journalism coverage through the Big Guys at ESPN/NBC and an audience that probably has no
clue about Letsrun, the trolls, or the tiny-dick wannabe's there dissing on truly great athletes.
This is a niche board with rabid distance runners, wannabe's, has-beens, and never-were's.
It's full of trolls, patently encouraged by the Brojos.
IT"S HOW THEY $TAY RELEVANT!
Coleman does not need LRC.
Does anybdody??
Signing out.

it's not like LRC even writes about sprints very often... I'm assuming it's related to this?

also, LRC should call this out more than writing that Coleman "wasn't in the mood to talk." If this was a politician's response to a reporter, the story would say so-and-so refused to answer questions, plain and simple.
Huh? It's not his "job to talk to the media". His job is to run fast. That's it.
Incorrect. His job is to sell shoes. Being a marketable personality for a shoe company means running fast, yes, but also being a personality the public wants to pay attention to. News coverage = free marketing.
I think that Coleman has some obligation to speak to the media regarding his own performances and the performances of his direct competition. His job is definitely not just to run fast - it's to entertain and to market Nike products.
I don't blame Coleman for not wanting to talk about Lyles with JG, but he probably could have avoided the discussion in another way, and not just asking not to talk about it at all. If JG asked him about Lyles, he could just deflect the question or answer in a boring way that causes JG to ask other questions or to drop the topic. That's what 80% of interviews are anyway
I used to not care much for Coleman, but after seeing how he responded to Jon's questions I would carry his baby

OH, now the Letsrun crew is surprised that people don't want to talk to them for their journalism and world famous message boards?!
LRC is surprised that a Nike athlete doesn’t want to talk to them??
Ha!
(More Suzy Favor pictures please).
Journalists are idiots. Coleman is an idiot.
