The age grouper that came up from behind her grabbed her elbow and stopped her. He shouldn’t have done this. I’m sure he had no idea she had under half mile to go and was the race leader, but its still not right.. She might not have made it but deserved to have the chance on her own after having gone so far. That guy might have cost her the win, the money, and Kona slot.
Lots of crazy stuff happens in IM. She had such a huge lead she could have sat down in shade for a few minutes, cooled off, walked it in and still won.
Nope, he did exactly everything right. This video shows her last 15 minutes of the race:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bo1cf3UWizQAfter 1 min, you can see her unable to continue, just standing and very dizzy. Then she did run/walk for 15 more mins, subconsciously. Had no one interfered and helped her, she could have died there. She was at the absolute limits of what's humanly possible and on the brink of death. In an interview with German newspaper she said that she can't remember the last 20 minutes of the race.
She was either out of carbs/sugars, or she was just completely dehydrated and lacking minerals/salt, normally the brain would tell her to stop by knocking her out in time to prevent death but she was mentally so strong that she ignored all the warnings the brain could give her and managed to keep going, which clearly isn't healthy if not life-threatening.
