I am doing about 60mpw right now and am building up to 75-80mpw by mid-summer, but as a bit of extra low impact cardiovascular activity, I have started swimming 2-3x a week. I have already noticed my form and breathing improve as a result of being in the water consistently, but I was wondering how I would legitimately program my swimming training in accordance with my running?
Is swimming similar to running where I put in long slow laps now in the summer and slowly decrease the time and increase the intensity as my season comes closer? I am not familiar with swimming terminology so for lack of a better word I have been doing "fartlek" type workouts where I do a set number of laps then rest until my heart rate returns to normal and then go on. I have been playing with sets and reps, but I am assuming that I can't do a workout every time I am in the pool or my CNS will be drained.
I appreciate any and all advice. Thanks.
