Alright, technically, Matt Daniels has run 13:50.71 to Walmsley's 13:52.87, but Daniels is in 3rd in his debut.
Walmsley is the fastest steeplechaser in the field.

Matt Daniels ran fro what college?
Well the Africans would have to run in the mountains for a while first.
The comparison isn't fastest 5k period. It's fastest 5k within a group of runners who specifically train for this kind of race.
Also, their mile times are like 2 -3 seconds apart (3:59 and 4:01? 4:02?)...not a factor over 100 miles.
Okay, leaders are past the 60 mile mark or the official race start mark for those in the know.
Predictions below:
Hazen: Holds onto 2nd place with no flailing
Walmsley: DNF at mile 80 or so with puking
Matt Daniels: Walks it in with 15th place
Courtney Dauwalter: new CR
Jeff Browning: Third
David Laney: Tenth
Chris Mocko: DNF
Tom Evans: Winner
Ian Sharman: Fourth
SandesMan: Fifth
M. Daniels ran for Adams. Nevermind that.

Running is running. If you're fit, you'll win.
I remember when the old haters used to say Walmsley could never win WSER.
Nobody said that.
But the 5000 m time is pretty unimportant for an ultrarace.
Not to mention that he has just passed 61 miles. So there are a lot of things which can happen. A 100 miler starts to get interesting at about mile 70. Before that it is just a warm up.
But these are things a 5000m runner wouldn't know.
Chris Mocko will tell everyone he's tall and graduated from Stanford.
For me, 100 milers do not get interesting at about mile 70, they actually get interesting at mile 30 or so and then ebb and flow from there.

Can't believe that you didn't even mention Camille. Currently 15th still looking for a good excuse to DNF.
In all the interviews that she's done, thinking of this one interview that she was doing during an actual run itself on trail, she always has this sweet, innocent, childlike grin, showing that she actually loves what she's doing and this coming from a really wholesome place.

You are missing the point bro. Read about Matt Carpenter.

This^
I can't even begin to imagine what the Kenyans and Ethiopians would do at WS 100!
A few elite Kenyans do two oceans and comrades, a non technical road ultra, they very rarely ever produce good results. Usually DNF.

Good point...to his credit he's self coached, so his disciplined 3+timed runs, over distance runs all seem to be working.
What else is at play, the weather! Ive never seen so many crew, spectators all wearing hoodies, long sleeve, and the competitors wearing t-shirts. Hopefully for JM he takes enough time to allow nutrition in. Besides the bonk from JM 2 years ago there was a female who dropped out at mile 93...so much can happen what great athletes all around!!

Cool story bro. That doesn't win races and no one cares about where the desire to run comes from. Red in tooth and claw. Camille Herron is so overrated and reality has just slapped her on the face.
All right, to anyone out there who's making predictions, on this kind of a rare thread, closely following a special event, it'll probably be better that use your actual handle/username so you can man up and stand up for your predictions.
No harm done,just more fun.
Anne Trason is still the Queen.
I watched the pre-Comrades interview. She said something old along the lines of she's been running such long distances that comrades will feel like a Sprint to her and will be over before she even knows it. I thought that was a bit too cocky and distasteful when I heard it live.
It's still early for predictions.
Stop it with the Walmsley DNF prediction. It's like 75 degrees out there. He just set a 50 mile WR or WB or whatever we're calling it. He isn't going to fall apart today.
I predict that Jared Hazen wins with a new CR after Jim drops out.
Courtney Dauweiler finishes with a new CR as well.
Ian Sharman gets 8th place
And Camille Herron retires quietly from the sport after a DNF at Rucky Chucky at mile 78.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
