Regarding Courtney, it was in her control whatever is that happened to her. Meaning, how she reacted. Scott Jurek had a severe sprained ankle in 2001 and did not drop from the race. He went on to win and solidify his 3-peat there. Jurek sprained his ankle before Hardrock one year; a few days prior. He started the race and won in record time. Ultimately, the person is in complete control. It's all up to you how you react to adversity. On the other side of adversity is a person you didn't know that existed within you.
Okay A sprained ankle is different than an injury that comes out of nowhere and causes your leg to give out every time you put weight on it. At least with a sprain you know what happened, you know it’s going to hurt but if you tape it well enough and run more gingerly you will most likely be fine. She had 20 miles left and could barely put weight on it. I mean it could be a stress fracture for all we know, but not something I would want to push through for 20 miles and potentially make much worse.
