I'm soooo moving to Boulder. Why? Because Boulder is kinda amazing. You know? Taco Tuesday, the vegan version but soy free. Damn son! That's what's up!

For what it's worth many year's ago I took part in an experiment that had a run to exhaustion one week, and runs trying three different methods of water carrying over the next three weeks. I believe that the conclusion was that the energy costs were not much different for any of the methods. Study was at Adelphi University in NY, and a paper was published.
All studies demonstrate is what whoever sets them up wants to show.
That carrying weights in the hands is more tiring to the hands and arms is not a difficult concept.
I have seen more than one trail runner carrying the handheld water bottle shoved in the waistband of their running shorts. That is the worst solution to tired-of-carrying-the-bottle possible. It is not a good look on the trail.

This^
Mocko always tells you he's "big" and Sage always tells you he's vegan. Both can't cut the mustard at running.
Looks Walmsley will be wearing M1 bid again next year. Just hit 94.3 with a big lead.

That's what I do when mine is empty. It's a bad look?
Walmsley's bigger than both Mocko and Sage.
Jimmy O'Lad is 6'4"
WALMSLEY 94.3 miles done 5.9 miles to go 13:19:00 elapsed time No sub 14 hour run today. He would need to finish at under 7 minute pace.

It's a tough last 9.5 miles on all accounts but he can do. I bet he won't be anywhere past 14:05, but he may have to drop the hammer at the end to get under 14. Definitely doable.

Maybe your unit is small enough to not worry about being banged around by a water bottle.
Yeah sub 14 isn't happening but a big CR still in the works.
Really hoping it's Jimmy and Courtney.
Courtney Dauwalter leads #WS100 at the American River (mile 78) in 13:10 elapsed, falling off record pace. She walked in to the river crossing and and her thigh tapped up to her hip. Spent about 8 minutes in the aid station before setting sail across the river
Courtney walked it in to the river. 13:41/mile that last section that is downhill (I think). That's not good with 20 miles to go. Could be a good race developing for the women!

It's on.
https://twitter.com/iRunFar/status/1145111163748986882?s=20I don't get why people carry bottles in their hands.
Strapped in on their chest would be be much less energy consuming.
Per a peer-reviewed study I saw many years ago, handheld bottles do take more energy than hydration vests. IIRC, it was a single digit percentage difference (like 5%, but I don't recall exactly). I can try to dig it up if anyone is interested, it's somewhere on my laptop.
However, despite the energy sacrifice, there are two definitive advantages of bottles: they are easier and faster to refill at aid stations, and they don't add an extra layer of insulation to the core of your body like vests do. Also, some people find it easier to drink from bottles because you can just lift it to your mouth.
Back to back WS course records and a 50 mile world record should finally silence the haters. This kind of race, he's the best in the world.

There was a LONG delay posting splits.
@Quarry Road
Walmsley -- 05:42pm / 12:42:00 elapsed
Hazen -- 05:56pm / 12:56:00
Hopefully it's not bad.
