Okay, just realized that passwords here are case sensitive. Anyway....Has anyone ever run the City To Surf 12K in Perth? It's coming up this Sunday and I'm planning on running it.I understand that it has a pretty good sized hill in the latter stages of the race?
Also, any advice on jet lag? I've got about 24 hours of air time ahead of me, not counting layovers and end up on the bad side of a 15 hour time change. Thanks in advance for your help.
Dave
Dave,
You'll have a blast running this one. You've got at least 20 hours of flying time in front of you to get there - that is if you go the most direct route. My advice is to stay hydrated on the flight and walk around at least every 2-3 hours. Depending on what time you arrive in Perth, do a light jog and then keep yourself awake until its nightime locally.
The race has 2 big hills. The first about 800M in (and its big). The second is even bigger at around 6-7km. Once you get to the top (at round 9km) you have a 2.5-3km downhill ride home. Its a fairly hard course.
There will be about 8-9,000 starters and plenty of fast locals. Ray Boyd has won it 10 plus times... his course record for the 12km is 35mins and change.
Have a good race!
Barry
I will be running it also this year. As Barry has mentioned there are two hills (major ones) but he neglected to mention the third at 9km which isn't steep, it just takes everything out of your legs for about 500m, then it is a fairly cruisy run to the finish. The first km is all uphill with the last 500m of it very steep. Then 1.5km downhill, then 3.5km fairly flat. 6km has another steep hill for about 600m then cruise down to 7km. Flat and fast for next 2km until you turn the corner at 9km and hit the third hill. Then down hill to the finish with the last 800m on grass. I have heard rumours there are a few east coast (Australia) runners coming over to try and kick Ray Boyd off the podium. come over and join in the battle. Should be good conditions for the race. come by my marquee after the race behind the presentation stage and introduce yourself. my Marquee is "Elite Sports Performance"
Cheers

PS: there are already 16,000 entrants registered in the race.
Thanks for the input guys. Sounds like a tough course. Hopefully the jet lag wont kick my ass.The course actually sounds pretty similar to a race here in the States, the Bloomsday 12K in Spokane, Washington. It has some good hills also, just big enough to sap your strength.
What is the 4K course like? Is it a little more moderate?
Thanks again,
Dave
I have never run that race, but I have been to Perth on business 4 times. It is one of my favorite cities in the world! You will love it there! There is a beautiful park along the river by the casino (Burswood Casino).
ENJOY! Jason
I also am competing in the Perth City to Surf on Sunday. I did a practice run on the course a couple of weeks ago and as has been mentioned, the first hill is the biggy and right at the start. I went hammering up the hill with plenty of energy and spent the rest of the run trying to regain some composure.
Enjoy your race!
Dave
Well, I made it here in one piece. After 33 hours of flights and layovers, I don't know how I'm going to run, but I signed up as soon as I got here. You're right , Jason, Perth is beautiful (this is my second time here).Hopefully, after some rest in the next 36 hours I won't run like total shit. What is a good time for this course? I've run about 41 minutes a few times at Bloomsday and it sounds like a comparable course.I guess time will tell. Good luck, everyone, hope to meet you for a beer afterward.
Dave
Dave, Give me a call in Perth. O417 996 711 or 9382 8419. I live in Subiaco which is along the course. Where are you staying?
Whitey
The course record is around 36min low.
Kim,
I'll give you a call today (Saturday), maybe we can get together for an easy jog and some pick-ups. I'm at the Holiday Inn City Centre. If I'm not mistaken the race starts about a block from here? You can reach me on this mobile number while I'm in Oz: 04 4016 6054. It's 4:15 AM, still getting acclimated to the time change, so give me a call when you're up and about this morning.
Cheers,
Dave Ross
