Navy intelligence is where all the well educated people go who want to "serve". That was what Mayor Pete did. My neighbor went to Dartmouth for finance and did Navy intelligence after he graduated. He also was thinking about politics, but ended up in a hedge fund after finishing his years in the Navy.
You may also look at working as a political risk analyst. Insurance companies sell political risk insurance for companies looking to do business in unstable parts of the world. The political risk analysts advise the insurers on whether the rebels will come out of the jungle and kidnap all the westerners. There are also political risk analysts that do consulting directly for businesses.
The folks you're talking about (mostly, if not all) are reservists. Pretty sure that this guy is looking for a full time job.
Sorry, let me fine tune that reply. Of course, some "well educated" folks go on active duty as intel officers (contributing to the off-putting smarty pants demographic in that field). But if you're only willing to do reserves, then MANY more will pick intelligence, because there just aren't many other options in the (Navy) reserves for people who haven't already been on active duty (Supply is anther prominent one, last I knew).
But if one wants to go active duty (the OP, I believe), then there is absolutely no reason to limit oneself to intelligence. Pretty much everything is open to you, as long as you don't think (like many intel folks apparently do) that much of the other stuff is beneath them. Pilot, infantryman, ship driver, tanker, submariner, artilleryman, logistics, etc, etc., etc.
