The hashtag #CancelStudentDebt has been receiving quite a bit of attention on Twitter. Bernie claims that he will absolve $1.5 trillion of national student debt and make a college education free.
On one hand, I believe that college is criminally overpriced and the loan companies are predatory in the sense that they are giving loans to young people without any proven source of income... there's a reason why I can't get a mortgage without proving I have a job/saings because back in 2006 when those requirements were less stringent it didn't work out too well.
On the other hand, based on historical examples the only way I see this happening is if the American taxpayer foots the bill. That pisses me off. I went to a state school and got a fellowship for grad school, so I had no student loans. I'm not 'fortunate', I just made responsible financial decisions. The people on twitter who get a degree in english lit at a private institution with no financial plan to pay back the loan are now asking for a handout from YOU, the taxpayer. It's not only that though, it's the complete lack of accountability that these people demonstrate. If you object, then YOU are just an out of touch boomer that has no compassion. Yes, YOU with only a high school education from the 1970s who saved responsibly and put your own kids through college.
This situation is indicative of a significant cultural divide in this country; one that is continually exploited in politics. There needs to be mandatory finance classes in public high schools.
