It doesn't mean anything and the only way to find out how much you can improve is to train and see how good you get.

it means something. how much... well not as much as people used to think. However, I think it's well established that over 65(males) is important for college and up.

I am a woman.
I want to OTQ at some point in my life. This requires 6:17 pace or better. I am on low miles at the moment, I was injured for a while so I have been building up the last 6 months. When I came back from injury, I couldn’t run a single sub 7 mile but now after building a little base on 25 mpw I can hold OTQ goal pace for 2 miles. As I drastically up my mileage over the next few years with a focus on staying injury free, I hope to be running many miles at that pace and hopefully below.
Just wanted to know if my goals were realistic. I do have a “halfway” goal so to speak which is qualifying for boston. I think I could challenge that timing this year, my recent half marathon was 1:47 and it felt super easy.
Absolute VO2 max is trainable trainable (for some people in can be improved 50% in only 6 weeks), not counting improvements from fat loss, so it's a bad indicator of current fitness or potential. Some activities like XC skiing improve your VO2 max even more than running can, but that doesn't make you a better runner.
If you want to know how much potential you have then look at your PRs at various distances and training history. A VO2 max test adds nothing of value to the equation.
What matters is how fast you are running at 43 ml/kg.
I've had a few VO2 max tests myself and have accumulated a bit of knowledge on it. Some thoughts:
- Are you currently at race weight? Weight obviously influences your VO2 max.
- What was the protocol? There are many "standard protocols" for a VO2 max test but they will yield different results. The one I try to get is one with 3-4 minute stages to find VT1 and VT2 followed by 30-60s stages to exhaustion (to find VO2 max / vVO2 max). You also want to have the incline fixed at 1% grade throughout the test.
- You're VT2 (lactate threshold) is 84% of VO2 Max. Given this is decent, I take you are moderately trained? It is possible with more training you can boost this to 85-90% VO2 max (and 90-93% VO2 max for elites).
- VO2 max can be boosted by doing 3-5K pace intervals, but is largely set by your genetics.
- vVO2 max and pace at VT2 is more interesting, do you know these?
- An even more important measure is your running economy. Develop a more powerful stride, run relaxed, and spend lots of time running at your goal pace! This will give you the most room for improvement.

Oh yeah, what an excellent idea - run a HM full out while coming back from injury with next to zero base. What could possibly go wrong? :)

Who says I paid?
Time trials and a mirror tell you far more than VO2max. The denominator in VO2max test is an athlete's weight. Too many college and elite runners starve themselves in order to improve silly VO2max number. How fast one can race and a mirror will tell you if you can improve. If you do not look like an athlete in mirror, do something about it.

5’4 114lbs 18-20% body fat range. A lot of people tell me I look underweight, not too sure what to make of that.

Nothing is free unless your time is worthless.
You're running 25 mpw which is way too low. You're in about 20:00 5k shape which needs to improve. Focus on the big picture not dubious lab experiments.

Just curious if you mean 4.3 LT or 43% of VO2 Max?
Blood lactate of 4mmol (lactate threshold) was reached at 43 ml/kg / 6:52 per mile pace.

I know, I’m only just coming back from injury. The experiment was offered to me, I don’t actually know A great bunch about VO2 maxes and thresholds.
