He ran 3:39 last week so yes an impressive performance. When he runs under 335 he will run sub 730
Drew MF Hunter drops a 7:39 3k, his previous best was 8:14

The IAAF tables have 7;39 3k = 13;08 5k = 8:15 2 mile. They aren’t perfect since the events aren’t ran at the same frequency, but they are more accurate for elite performances than formula based conversions. He’s probably close to 13:10 shape. I’d guess 13:12. Hopefully he gets a diamond league 5k in at some point this summer.

Dude... he's 21.. Come now.. Letsrunners are never impressed.
Not to mention 8 of those top-10 times are what I would call recent. At least not in that 20-30 years ago category. At some point, fast times will stagnant. We want a clean sport but then we're gonna be mad if times aren't super fast. 7:39 @ 21 is great. What will it take for this place to just start a thread & for people to positively comment about someone's running? -
That's right, big guy, when there are three team spots up for grabs then typically at least three people can be favored to make the team. Such a bright boy, so good at math.
-
He should have gone to college. He is unproven in pressure situations. If he is top 5 in any event at nationals, I’d be a true miracle. When he can close a race like Rupp or Centro, give a shout out.

The way the Tinman athletes train there is no peak at the end of the season. Once they are in good shape there is not much improvement to be had for the rest of the season. I predict Hunters next 5K (if not run tactically) to be right at 13:20 again. This can be a good approach but it isn't going to win any gold medals. Ben True on the other hand may make the opposite mistake by racing too much too soon. October is a long ways away but I suppose his main goal right now is just to make the team. I respect Ben a lot. One of the few Americans who is consistently mixing it up with the Africans in the Diamond League. I hope he finally gets on the Olympic team next year.
Track athletes need to compete more for the sport to attract fans
Track athlete is competing too much and will burn out before the championship meets when it counts.

As a professional choice, he absolutely should not have gone to college. He was never going to get more money than he did coming out of high school. CU Boulder is a good school--not to open a can of worms, but it's probably better than Oregon--and Hunter is progressing well. I also don't buy the "people need to run in the NCAA so that they can learn how to race in pro races" idea. Morgan McDonald didn't learn a dang thing this year other than how to stay healthy. He's fitter than everyone and has better footspeed than everyone who's almost as fit as him. Kicking a 52 in a 14:0x race isn't going to help him win a world title any more than Hunter kicking a 58 in a 7:39 race will help him win. And I find it exceedingly hard to believe that the guy who won Heps in 4:05 for the 1500 learned anything worthwhile if he wants to go pro.

Outkicked Chris O’Hare (who’s run 3:32/made multiple world finals) for the win in the Adidas boost mile last year, in addition to his US indoor title and Sir Walter mile title in 2017. Also raced Suleiman to the line when he ran 3:36 in 2017. He’s barely been a pro for 2 years now, not sure what pressure situations you’re referring to. He’ll be fine. -

Lagat is a PROVEN drug cheat who let off on a "TECHNICALITY". Now that the truth is becoming more and more evident, mainly that E. Africans have been ALLOWED to cheat for three decades, it's time to remove people like Lagat, who was caught, from these lists.
False. Do your research before spouting off BS. -

How many big races have most 20 year-olds won? -
NCAAs offer three national meets to peak for and compete at. It did wonders for Rupp’s career, but I guess the heir apparent, that Tinman has dubbed the Lebron James of our sport, is better than Rupp.

So you're upset that he went pro instead of running in college. Cool. That doesn't mean he "can't win big races".

Better than Rupp was as a high schooler, and could smoke a 21 year old Rupp in anything under a 10k. Plus he’s not fuelled by Alberto’s Saladbar juice like Rupp is. Also I’d say that Noah Lyles is the Lebron James of our sport, Hunter’s more of a Kobe. -

No, Hunter's far more of a Howard or a Melo. -

Hunter has never made a US team for World's or Olys, he's not even an NBA All Star equivalent. Maybe he's the high school phenom drafted in the first round who gets on the Rising Stars roster, at best this far. He's Lonzo Ball. -

Lonzo Ball? Throw some respect on the Footlocker and sub 4 mile indoors high school runner, who also won a US national title just a couple of months ago.....from the slow heat like a fuccing boss.
Man, the Drew Hunter haters are back and in greater numbers too (obi wan kenobi voice)
