My girlfriend of a year has already adopted one dog and one cat (long before I ever met her). She is in poor financial shape and struggles to pay her bills each month. She has no savings. Her dad has had to bail her out when she had an unexpected expense, and I have done the same before (though to a lesser extent). We have had several high stress conversations about money because it is a problem area for her and one she doesn't like to talk about even when necessary. She has many other redeeming qualities that have still made her a good girlfriend overall though.
Well now, she came across a friendly stray cat on her walk home from work a few days ago and has been giving it food. She has been hinting that she wants to take it home and adopt it, though I can't yet tell if she's serious or just voicing some wishful thinking aloud. Considering she can't really get by on her own financially as it is, and she already has a dog and a cat, I am thinking seriously of breaking up with her if she says she's going to adopt this new cat. I honestly don't even feel like it's worth having a discussion about. If she would make such a stupid and irresponsible decision as to adopt a third animal when she has to occasionally rely on her dad and boyfriend just to feed herself as it is, I kind of see her as not someone I could ever be with long term. However, I wonder if I'm overreacting. Am I overreacting? What do you think? How would you feel?
