The 13 goals were fine - nicely done.
The celebrations - especially from goal #9 on - were cringe-worthy.
The real crime was the added 3 minutes. I heard that the ref has been referred to the International Criminal Court for a Geneva Convention violation. That was some heartless stuff right there...
Fair or Foul? Canadians rip US women's soccer team for "disgraceful" celebrations in 13-0 rout.

The ref could have very easily added 5-6 minutes of stoppage time in the 2nd half but was actually nice to only add 3. You know how long it takes to reset after a goal? It always takes 30+ seconds at a minimum. 9 regulation goals (not counting Lloyd's in stoppage time) X 40 seconds = 6 minutes. Plus each team used their 3 subs, there were 4 stoppages for those subs in the 2nd half I believe.
You people making all these judgments about a sport you don't know and a game you obviously didn't watch are kind of frustrating. Also, Rapinoe being over the top on her celebration is kind of her thing. She's a very loud personality in a lot of ways, both on the field and her VERY vocal stances on all things LBGTQXZY. So that's just a normal day at the office for her. No one has mentioned that players like Alex Morgan were going around and having personal conversations with the Thai players after the game, obviously trying to inspire them and tell them not to give up on themselves was a nice thing.
If the US doesn't win the entire tournament, it's deemed a failure. If Thailand wins 1 game in the tourney, that's considered a success. The US doesn't improve or gain anything from a game where they only play hard for 30-45 minutes like most of you apparently wanted to see. End of rant. -

There is an issue of sexism, but it comes from a different angle than Wombach. The men do not celebrate when they have a decisive goal differential because the players on the winning team may have pro teammates on the losing team or may one day end up on the same pro team. The professionalism on the men's side is due to the fact that men's pro soccer is a massive worldwide professional sport with tons of money and the national team play is not the center of their professional universe. For the women, it is the exact opposite. None of the players on Thailand's team play pro on a team outside of Thailand. And women's pro soccer is tiny compared to the men's leagues. So, the world cup and olympics are epic for the women because it is really the only time their sport is on a national or international stage. They are going to live it up on every goal because once the world cup is over, no one is going to care about women's soccer until the Olympics.
That's a good point...but I wouldn't put it under the heading of "sexism." More like...their behavior can be understood because of their circumstances.
I would add that women's soccer has not been around that long...not at this level anyway. So it could be that the sportsmanship...or maybe the empathy for one's fellow competitor...has yet not matured to the level of the men...simply due to less experience...rather than any inherent differences due to gender.
+1. There are other lenses besides the postmodern one. -
Good for the USWNT.
They are the overwhelming favorites, the rest of the world will be rooting against them regardless of who they play. They should embrace their role as the bad guys (girls). If they keep running up the score and rubbing the other teams noses in it, I might start watching.
Remember Charles Barkley threw a cheap elbow against some nobody from Cameroon in the original Dream Team's first round Olympic Game. -

Sorry, you don't get a free pass from making a complete a$$ of yourself just because you're LGBTQVHOAWTFIDBBQIJODK+. Not here anyway.
Pretty sure the guy was joking about the stoppage time comment. -
Hey Abby, why don't you have a few drinks then drive home?
-
Um...that was not Abby... Don't really care what Abby Wambach or Hope Solo think.
Do wonder about the double standard of acceptability of women behaving this way, while not a single person would ever imagine German players dancing and cavorting after going up 7-0 on Brazil in 2014. Thailand is a minnow, Brazil was a top 3 world team, yet its OK to do that against Thailand while feeling sorry for Brazil, a team that actually deserved humiliation for their utter lack of preparation and coaching?? Huh? -

1. I watched the game
2. Not sure you know the game - stoppage isn't added after goals as a rule (though they might add a little if there is a lengthy celebration or reset)
Never in the history of international soccer has any team - men or women - scored 13 goals. It's uncharted territory. I did see Alex Morgan and others having heart-felt conversations after the match with the Thai players and I loved seeing that. The Thai team and the American team don't really belong on the same field in terms of skills. The Thai players probably idolize many of the American players. Especially Morgan and Rapinoe, who have been playing so long that many Thai players were young girls when they started following the two of them. To see those stars and others acting like the 12th goal was some miraculous, hard-fought achievement was classless. I played sports through college and was on both ends of many a blowout. You see true sportsmanship in those moments on both sides. The Americans disappointed massively against Thailand in that regard. My guess is that they would agree and you will not see them act that way in a similar circumstance in the future.
I have huge reverence for US Women's soccer and I think they deserve to be held to a higher standard than any other team on earth. To make excuses for them in this situation and have such low expectations for them is an insult to the the US players and the organization. -
Everyone trying to draw a comparison to the German's in the 2014 world cup is forgetting they were playing Brazil in Brazil. If they started doing some insane celebrations they probably would have gotten murdered by soccer hooligans. Note that I don't think this is specific to Brazil but any soccer crazed nation like the Netherlands or UK or Germany.

Since there are 5 teams that could legit win the Womens World Cup this year, perhaps the USWMNT should concern itself more about Karma. "Rubbing the opponents noses in it" only makes the inevitable loss, at some point in the tourney, that much more delicious. Why does nearly everyone following the men's game feel the opposite when analyzing a mens blowout victory. Can someone explain the difference? Do women need the ability to rub it in to feel better about themselves, while men feel better staying classy? Do not get it.
-
LOL. So you predict Germany in 2014 would have danced around German Samba style against Brazil if they were playing in Paris? Please.
-
A factual correction for you. This is not the highest scoring game in international soccer history, but it is the highest in a world cup. (The previous record in a world cup was 11-0).
-
I mean, I do think they would have celebrated more than they did if it was in neutral territory.

I completely agree, and it was extremely lame for Wambaugh to try playing the sexist card. Show some sportsmanship, once it’s 5-0, play all your subs and if they still score another time or two, go into delay mode and work on killing time.
I was with you right up until "go into delay mode and work on killing time." There is nothing, absolutely nothing, wrong with continuing to score goals, regardless of the score. It is not in any way disrespectful. Indeed, starting to play keep away is far more disrespectful IMHO. -

How utterly predictable to revert to sexism as an excuse for boorish behavior.
I’m American and sadly think that the team did not represent the country honorably.
US wont get past Germany in the next round . -
The whole WC is a marketing scam anyway. They let in a country with a pitiful team just to market their junk to everyone.
-
Everyone had like, 4-ish years to practice. You can either sit around, or work on all the small things you think it takes to compete against other teams. Herb Brooks didn't just tell his team, "We're going to practice hockey."
-
While the US played reasonbly "hard" it looked like they could have put up 20 if they wanted. You can only sub three, so you can't put your reserves in, so either play keep-away or purposely pull players off the pitch. That could be construed as not sportsmanlike as well, but this is the World Cup and goal differential of course counts for something.
The later goal celebrations might have been a bit too much, so a couple of players might want to rethink that. -
You purport to be Canadian, but your poor command of English suggests otherwise.
Don't let the door hit ya' on the way out. -
My take
(1) Whether the Americans were on unsportsmanlike in their celebrations is subjective. Fans of the team I am sure it think it was a great show of exuberance. I thought it was excessive and silly. But I also don't know the back story here.
(2) Regardless, it was no big deal, and the Canadian sportscasters were just looking for an angle to generate viewership. It was a nonstory.
(3) Here's the angle no here is discussing, this is absolutely the best thing that has happened to the American women's soccer team. Honestly it's gold. There is a buzz about this team now. People are watching and rewatching the goals and celebrations. People wonder what they will do next game. People are and know the players better.
If they want more money, people have to have an interest and know the players. They helped themselves greatly.
