People are so quick to jump on the idea that she’s gaining weight and that’s going to ruin her career because that’s what happens to other teenage girls. But honestly she doesn’t look to me like she’s gained much weight. She wasn’t a prepubescent twig before; she already looked like a strong woman. I imagine if she’s gaining weight, it’s only a few extra pounds, which isn’t going to destroy her career by any means. Shelby Houlihan is proof that bigger doesn’t always equal slower.
Plus, the stress Tuohy mentioned could have caused her to gain a few pounds via stress eating, which can easily be lost. Weight fluctuations really aren’t that big of a deal in the long run. Have you seen pictures of Karissa Schweizer in HS? She was WAY heavier; very different body type than she has now. It’s not uncommon for female athletes to gain some weight in their late teens and then get a lot leaner a few years later as their hormones even out and they figure out what training and diet works for them. So much can happen in the next several years. Heck, even Mary Cain has time to come back (though I know it’s doubtful). You can’t be on top of your game, totally focused on running, healthy, and at the perfect chiseled weight all the time. Especially in high school. Tuohy is not a pro. Give her a break.
