Indeed, I remember as far back as the 1980's many U.K coaches voicing the opinion that the worst thing that any aspiring athlete could do was to sign up to the U.S high school/college system.
It was recognised then as a result-obsessed brutal, burn-out inducing process that ruined far more middle and long distance talent than it ever produced. The phrase "nurturing talent", has been pretty much unheard of over here, it seems - ever.
