The hardest race is the one you have not trained for properly.

I ran the 800 last night. That 2nd lap was one of the most painful experiences in my entire running history. I had zero recollection of this pain from my highschool days.
Last week ran the mile in 5:12, felt great. FELT GREAT.
Last night ran a 26.39 200m, then ran the 800 twenty minutes later. 2:20. Splits were 65/75.
Sure I went out too fast, but I feel like even had I gone 68..it wouldn't have mattered... the pain on the second lap was so intense. Death march hardly describes. I would take the 400 ANY DAY over the 800. Everyone here talking about 5k/10k/marathon are full of s hit.
The 800 is absolutely the hardest race and my mind won't be changed until I run my first marathon I guess. Even after the race the lactacid head throb was agonizing.
Well now, I'm not so sure. Last night I ran 56.88 for the 400. In my head I was like this will be easy after that 800 last week.
The last 100 meters of the 400 were just had difficult and mentally taxing as the 2nd lap of my 800 last week. Death trudge.
It may be too close call. They both hurt.

The 1000 is a nasty one as well. You run an 800 and then try not to collapse for 200 meters more.

My guess is you haven't run many 5Ks and/or 10Ks lately.
In high school kids choose to be sprinters first, then if they cannot do that or a field event
they turn to running middle distance. Some kids know they cannot run sprints
right away...so they start with middle distance. Then after a year or so they realize the 2 mile in
track and the 5K cross country is where it's at for them. As adults, if they still run, they do "fun" runs.
Do understand now? An all out 10K hurts for a looonnng time baby. Fewer people want that except
for a "fun" run. What I hate about people saying "Oh, the 800 is the hardest race," is that it's putting
yourself above everyone else who has found it necessary to run longer races.
Your comments remind me of the young man running the opposite direction I was on a loop around a lake. He yells out to me, "You should run in these shoes, you'll run faster." You are not King of all that you see.
No it's not.
