BYU takes major advantage of NCAA "religious exception" rule in regards to an athlete's 5 year clock. Essentially, if a BYU athlete leaves for a mission (normally 2 years and funded by the church) his or her 5 year clock stops. They don't get to train as often, but the simple fact is for an individual who is older (especially men) will be a lot stronger and have more success. Contrary, team sports can actually be hurt buy this rule (team chemistry and such) but for a sport like XC/Track... it is a MAJOR advantage and pretty much results in stolen NCAA bids to those who happen to not belong to this church and it's mission structure. Solution? Just end this dumb rule. If someone want to go on a mission, they use a red shirt year and lose an eligible year. The church allows for missions to take place after college. They DON'T have to go while in college, so this rule simply should change top make things more fair... need proof?
For most every institution besides BYU, athletes must abide by the 4 years of eligibility in 5 years.
Of the 32 BYU men who made it to Preliminaries:
• they have been out of HS for a combined 157 years
• the average number of years out of HS is 4.91 years
• 13 of the 32 have been out of HS for 6 or more years which is 41% of their athletes (which by most other institutions standards would NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR COMPETITION)
• 16 made it to Austin and of those 16, 5 of them have been out of HS for 6 or more years (31%...which by most other institutions standards would NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR COMPETITION) AND the average number of years out of HS for these 16 athletes is 4.81 years (combine 77 years)
