Well, customer service jobs of all sorts often have some kind of way to reward employees for being attentive and friendly.
In restaurants, tipping is supposed to make me want to offer you another martini when yours is finished. Ive worked plenty of restaurants and i WILL remember to punch in that martini you ordered (which boosts your ticket total, and thus boosts my tip).
In retail, a quota and/or commission structure (if you have such a thing) is the company’s way of getting you to be nice to people who might not be you cuppa tea otherwise. Have you ever sold a living room set to someone who wants you to print out the specs of the oyster colored couch and also theNantucket Gray? You stick with because there are financial incentives to making that cash register ring.
As for to-go food and counter service places (bakeries, bagel shops, starbucks style coffee shops), it is at least a way to try to incentivize polite, considerate, efficient service.
It’s not everyone’s favorite system, but as someone who has worked all kinds of customer service jobs, it DOES feel good to know that on the whole, i’m going to walk with more money in my pocket, than someone who treats people with only apathy.
And, yes, you can draw the line and refuse to tip at these kindsa places. It’s your call.
