How does a 23 year old Julien Wanders have bests of 3:43 / 7:50 / 13:24 all done in 2018 and a 27:44 done tonight and run 59:13?
All of those track times are right where Alberto Salazar at the end of his junior year in the Summer of 1980 ( at the age of 22). 3:43 / 7:43 / 13:22 / 27:49 (London 1980). The first three marks were from his sophomore year though. 10 weeks later he won the NYM in 2:09:41.
By the end of the 1980 track season THIRTY-FOUR people had run 27:44.36 or faster, but nobody had even cracked 1:02:00 for the half-marathon. 59:13 is 28:04 pace for 10K.
59:13 = 3553 secs
3553 secs / 21.0975 km = 168.41 sec/km = 2:48.41 per kilo
168.41 sec/km X 10km = 1684.1
= 28:04.1
I guess you have to take the blood OUT at some point in the year and it doesn't keep for six months.
One thing to remember was the half marathon wasn't like it is today. More accurate to look at the hour runs done back than.
In 1976 Jos Hermens ran 20,944 m for one hour. Or, VDOT equivalent to 60:25 half marathon. Jos Hermens 10000m PB is 27:41.
