Yes, cheaters have always been around.
Previously verification was done based on group knowledge. It wasn’t necessarily any better, but the first consideration has always been previous experience, then or now.
Crowdsourced scrutiny has improved, but far more transcons take place, with far more sponsorship. Money can corrupt a run as easily as any other activity. Both observers & most of the participants have little knowledge of such distances, as well.
The runner has to persuade the observer, the observer doesn’t need the slightest faith in the runner. Proof is rare, but it’s not a trial. IMO most believe in Proctor, but it’s not a democratic process. Asher buried Young with one video. You don’t have to worry about me doing that, I’m in Arkansas.
Privately, most of the old hands & multiday people don’t believe Proctor. Don’t worry, they’re unlikely to say so. Some do live on the course or have friends who do, not sure if they want to play a role; probably not.
