First off, this thread is no disrespect to Molly, who is a monster athlete and a tremendous runner.
Was just watching the 2019 London Marathon, reflecting on last year's New York race, and I think that, when all is said and done, she is going to have a marathon career similar to Ritz's... you look at her 5K, 10K and Half Marathon times and start to speculate about the potential at the marathon, but Ritz has had, famously, a very difficult time translating that many, many times.
Now, has Ritz run a great marathon? no question in my mind, i think that he has run three: his 2:07, the 2008 Marathon trials in Central Park, and his run in Beijing at the Olympics. but his consistency... simply hasn't been there. he's had many, many fueling and injury issues, and it was clear that the marathon simply isn't the best event for him.
I would love to be wrong, but I have the feeling that Molly will into the same bucket... her times at the shorter distances make us believe that she can ascend to Deena's and Shalane's position while moving up ... but I don't think so. If it was going to happen, it would have happened this last year's New York. With younger, fresher legs, she would have overtaken Shalane, but she didn't. At London this year, with great conditions, we saw sisson, like Hasay, show that she's a natural for the event, whille Molly ran 2:26.
I would not be surprised to see Molly take a number of stabs at the marathon, and maybe really crack one open, the way Ritz did with his 2:07, but I don't think that she makes the Olympic team, nor do I think that it will be an easy transition when she finally does nail one.
