Carleton would have beaten both Olaf and St Thomas at nationals last year with a top 5 of only underclassmen (Mueller, Wilkinson, Meikle, Nakasakam, Lavey) but would have struggled at conference. That being said if the top three teams were to score only their returners (seniors still displace but don't score to make it easier) the results of last year's MIAC meet would be:
Carleton-63 Mueller, Meikle, Wilkinson, Nakasaka, Santos
Olaf-83 Kadrofske, Primozich, Brenk, Herzog, Cassidy
UST-92 Wachter, Karrick, Kazlowski, Weil, Kiley
Bethel-154 Lelinga, Meskele, Bethke, Mendel, Woetzel
So it seems that Carleton is still the favorite, with Bethel a strong but slightly distant 4th. Carleton should see an extra boost at nationals over the top three too, given previous performance.
Now the question become between Olaf and St Thomas. On paper Olaf looks better, but the recent track performances by UST freshmen makes me think that they can edge the Oles this year. Now it may seem to many that the Tommies beating a Northfield team is sort of like the Patriots beating the Yankees* as far as new teams winning go, but it will be nice to see some divergence from the Carleton-Olaf binary we've seen the last two years.
Because of how much the sub-30 finishes at conference can change I will abstain from doing too much analysis there, other than to say that with the return of Tremayne Collins expect St. Johns to rise slightly in the rankings from last year, but only slightly, they have a shot at Bethel, but an outside one, too much of their talent graduated last year.
My predictions, divided into tiers based on who I think will be competing against each other
Carleton
UST
Olaf
Bethel
St Johns
Gustavus
Concordia (I like their freshhmen to improve over Mac)
Mac
Hamline
Saint Mary's (edges Augsburg)
Augsburg
Of course freshmen, especially in the bottom places, have an opportunity to drastically reshape this landscape, but for the most part I don't expect freshmen to play a huge role in reshaping the top 3. Carleton has become too deep at this point to need to rely on one, as are UST and Olaf (although I suppose a stud Ole freshman could catapult them back into 2nd)
