My son has run low 9:xx for the 3200. He is only a junior. He hopes to run sub 8:50 next year. He is interested in both BYU and Texas but is unsure which program he would develop best in. Thanks in advance for any advice!

BYU qualified more guys to NCAAs than Texas probably has on their roster.
Considering the backwards ass stuff I’ve seen you post on here, BYU would be a better fit for him than Austin.
Not close- BYU
BYU
NAU
Stanford
Wisconsin
I am confused that Texas is even under consideraton.
Go to Texas because it’s a better university with more opportunities after graduation. Who cares if he runs 10 seconds faster in the 5k because he went to BYU.

The LDS network is at least as big as texas exes.
What is your total cost of the two?

But doesn't apply if your not a Mormon grad.
BYU is going to have more depth and be better at XC/5000/10000. Eyestone is a very good coach. They are going to be very good for a long time.
Texas will have a smaller roster but their boys are running well. They just qualified 2 athletes in the steeplechase to the NCAA championships and they have Sam Worley who has run 3:38. It also appears that they signed most of the top athletes in the state of texas this year.
Both would be good choices and would offer your son a nice opportunity to develop.
If your son wishes to study engineering, business, or computer science, come to UT. Running is not as important as academics, and UT is among the best in the nation in these fields. Any other major, take your pick. BYU is the better distance school, but be careful not to get lost on the enormous roster.

I'd take a hardworking and family man type out of byu than any liberal mama's boy living off of his parent's money any day of the week.

BYU has a far superior distance squad. BYU is in a different universe. At nationals last year Texas' #1 runner came in well after BYUs #7 runner. In fact, unless your son is extremely talented he may end up getting lost on the roster and never have the opportunity to develop at BYU. So if he is an NXN or footlocker nationals individual qualifier, BYU is the place for distance running no doubt.
Academically they are comparable. Anyone who tries to draw any huge differences in academics doesn't know what they are talking about.
Now culturally, obviously there is a MASSIVE difference which should be apparent. If he isn't mormon, it could be a tough place for sure. Not your typical college experience at all. If he is mormon, BYU is the obvious cultural fit.
You have to be mormon to go to BYU. Its not like some of the church affiliated colleges where you can fake it. Its 100% mormon all the time.
No, you don't have to be Mormon to go to BYU.
I don't know much about Texas but Sam Worly and Alex Rogers seem to be running well.
BYU's Ed Eyestone is a great coach. I would even say (though many would disagree) that's he's one of the best in the country. He knows how to develop an athlete. He doesn't do a great job of peaking them at the right time, but he's definitely getting better about it and learning as he goes.
BYU has an amazing facility. They have a very nice mondo track for racing and recently got an old high schools track to practice on. The practice track is still nice. Not mondo but probably on the better end of high school tracks.
If your son is expecting to party in college then BYU is probably not for him. He will get in a lot of trouble if he drinks or has sex before married. If he is expecting to do anything like that, BYU is probably not for him. If he just wants to go to school and compete and isn't interested in the 'college experience' of drinking, partying, and whatnot; then he would be a great fit at BYU.
What evens does he want to focus on? In my opinion, Texas develops runners who focus on the mile very well. BYU on the other hand, does a better job at longer stuff. If your son wants to be a miler, Texas might be a better option. If he wants to do steeple, 5k, or 10k; BYU would be his best choice.
The problem with BYU is that they have a massive roster. They have so many athletes that it's difficult for the coaches to focus on each of them and I've heard that they tend to focus more on the ones who are running well. If your son has a history of being injury prone then this might be a problem.
If he's running low 9's then he shouldn't have a problem getting onto either team. If he runs 8:50 then he might even get a scholarship. Good luck on making the choice. Try to go on a visit to both colleges so you guys can meet the coaches and see the schools and facilities.
From a training standpoint, if you’re curious how your son will fit in you can compare his training with the BYU guys that post on Strava. Many of the top guys post there. Most seem to be running around 100 mpw, often in 6 days.
I’m assuming you’re Morman or else you wouldn’t consider BYU, but culture is a big part as well. If your son is injured and can’t run will he still be happy at the school.
I’d encourage you guys to consider NAU, Stanford and/or Portland.

My Catholic elementary school taught me better than that.
