Having run at BYU I can say that Coach Eyestone has less than 5 full scholarships dedicated to distance/mid-distance. They have a very well balanced track and field team which is how they were able to win the MPSF Indoor Conference meet this year against mostly PAC-12 schools and how on a regional level they are rated ahead of Texas Tech. Their men's team qualified 34 athletes to the West Prelims. While they do have an administration that allows for a large roster and the tuition is inexpensive, they distribute their scholarships among all the event groups. Like at every school, some of the distance runners qualify for academic scholarships but most are content to have a smaller athletic scholarship than they would at another university for the opportunity to be in a very good program.
Tuition and fees are around $5600 per year at BYU. About the same as at a comparably rigorous junior college in Mississippi. And BYU gives out academic scholarships to people who score 770 total on the SAT. So, BYU is basically free, and it is worth about that much.
