See pictures. This is in California. Unclear if this is a native tree or not, it's surrounded by eucalyptus, so it might not be a native.
Leaves are maybe 1 to 2 inches. Kind of shrub like, but maybe because of the shade of larger trees.

Check out Dahoon and see what you think. Its a holly which seems to make sense from the pics.

Cool, thanks. Im not certain it is that exact species, but I think you're right that it is a holly. I was thrown off by the smooth leaf edges, I didnt realize any type of holly didnt have spiky edges.
Generalized type of tree is good enough for my purpose, I'm going to slab this small piece I took and use it for ornamental purposes in woodworking, so "holly" is close enough to a specific answer for me, whether it is dahoon or not.
Actually, now im not so certain, just because the heartwood is so dark and holly species normally are really light in color. I went back and took a better picture of the berry. Does it match the berries of holly?
I think it might be a type of boxwood! That's what I'm coming up with after extensive googling of trees with purple heartwood, anyway. Berries look right.
Yeah Ill say I didnt feel good about the bark matching a dahoon though other features were close.
Not familiar with boxwood, a quick search shows a variety of topiary and bonsai, neat but not helpful in the least. If you can remember the flower sometimes that can go a long way.
Regardless, its some beautiful wood. Years ago I did cross sections of a 3-4" cedar cut into medallions and burned out text to make awards for a 5k.
