I raced against Collins in college. The guy was legit, finishing as the top American at Boston one year. Not much 5000m talent for a guy who was so good at the longer distances - I don't know if he broke 14:30, but I know he didn't break 14:20. Despite not having top end speed, he was a damn tough competitor even at the shorter distance races.
Also, Dan Mayer, who dominated D3 at North Central my senior year, ran 2:20:08. I was surprised to see a sub 14:00/29:00 guy hadn't run faster than that.
