Why does Jim Walmsley want to "give the middle finger to the marathon community"? What's wrong with this guy?

He probably was a few beers in like he ususally is.
Comes off as a total dbag.
Typical white trail runner. Knows he won't win any real races so goes to the trails with less competition and starts to believe the ultra community on how great he is.
Does he even have the OT qualifier? He won't get top 10.

JW's probably thinking of the LR haters, and Mizuno fanboy is one of the biggest.
The front page needs to be fixed. It's stuck in a long running script, so I can't read the article.
I praise him when he does something worth the praise, and call him out when he acts like a prick.
And I totally despise his lame fanboys.
Walmsley is the GOAT. Love his quote. Coming from a 2h16' guy I can appreciate.

You're an anti fanboy.
To piss off his haters. Can't wait till he spanks Rupp. Sub 2:11:30 BABY!!!
I hope he enjoyed his little stroll from mile 50 to 100K a few weeks ago, because he will be doing miles 22-finish that way in Atlanta.

DISTANCE RUNNERS ARE SO UPTIGHT AND AWKWARD AND NERVOUS.
i used all caps. apologies
I think this kind of minor jab is good for the sport. I generally don't like Walmsley, but he seems to have a good perspective about running at the moment and realizes he might crash and burn but at least he's going for it.
As a former middle distance runner who had a mild amount of success in the 400 to mile race distances, i love calling people out at road races when i'm competing in my 30's these days. Long distance guys are a different breed and could stand you loosen up...a lot in some cases.

You left out "coolest". I liked the part about how spending nights in a missle silo taught him how to be bored; evidently a valuable skill for an ultra runner.

Your reading comprehension skills suck, my friend. He didn't say he WANTS to do that. He said "that’s like the coolest middle finger I could give to the marathon community."
Read what comes before it the quote of the day and it makes perfect sense.
I kind of don't blame him for having this attitude, given how much hatred he gets on here. I mean the dude ran a 64 flat road half marathon on a pretty darn short training block to get the OTQ mark and he got BLASTED on the boards here. He stepped out of his comfort zone (longer distances and trail/mountain running). He went for it. As he said, "Dream big. Swing big. There's nothing to lose."
He's really in tune with road, track and trail running. Was just reading the article and he drops names like Centro, Kipchoge, Parker Stinson, Jenny Simpson, Kipchoge and many others. Gives full props to people like Joe Gray, Killian, Francoise, Camille, etc.

Guy has bravado. By next year, the O Ts are going to be about him. Hate him or love him, he is generating buzz that is sorely missed in distance running. Go Jim.

Why? Because anyone outside the ultra tuning community is a complete @sshole to this guy. Read some of the threads. Pretty disgusting. The overwhelming majority have never even seen the guy in person let alone let him...and definitely haven't spent any time with him.
In the eyes of LR, running 26.2mi is a holy, noble pursuit and 26.3mi is for stupid idiots who couldn’t break 4 on a track.
He was egged on by the coconino cowboys.
Reads to me as if he's meaning the IOC marathon community - you know, those guys/gals that has been complaining for years that the best in the World prefer to save themselves for a fall marathon where the money is better.
And doesn't everyone in America wanna give THEM the middle finger?

“love calling people out at road races”? What the heck does that mean?
