I have been tracking my calories and weight for the past 5+ weeks.
I am 5’9” and started at a weight of 152 pounds. I am now down to around 146, averaging about 1.24 pounds lost per week.
My average NET calorie intake over that time has been 2855 calories. (NET calories = total calories - exercise calories)
For example if I eat 3800 calories and burn 900 calories running, my NET calories for the day is 2900.
This results in my average calculated maintenance level to be 3475 calories. In other words, if I did not exercise or run, I would need to eat 3475 calories just to MAINTAIN my current weight.
There are some threads/posts on letsrun where people suggest to others to eat as little as 2000-2500 calories a day when training. This is INSANE!!! If I ate 2500 calories and burned 900 calories running, I would be eating only 1600 NET calories, which would be almost 2000 calories below my maintenance level.
Just a post to help those wanting to lose weight. Calculate your own maintenance calories to figure out what to eat to lose weight SAFELY and without feeling like total crap. I’m glad I didn’t just listen to people here saying to eat 2xxx calories a day while running.
