Allen - You got it, brother. Very intelligent comments here, and observations that ring true to me. I will monitor my body carefully, and take what it gives, both in training and racing.
Today’s run is a good example. It was sunny and on the warm side (70F when done), and I am still not far off of a marathon, and I could tell from the get-go that my body was not giving much. So...10.14 at 7:18 overall. I did, though, kick it some in that last mile, just for the heck of it, just to see what my body would do and how it would respond. So, after 7:23, and 7:02 in miles 8 and 9, I banged out a 6:13 in mile 10. And you know what? I felt awkward and sluggish in the first nine miles, but alive and “right” when getting my body into gear in the last mile. The last mile was by far the fastest and the only one that felt good. The rest felt like trash, as if they had been run by some impostor.
The main concern I have right now, though, is that last year at this time I could still average 6:59 or better on a warm or “off” day, whereas yesterday was 7:01 and today was 7:18. Perhaps the marathon is still in my legs. In any case, I took what my body gave me, as I have in the past.
All the best, my friend.
