You're right. Rupp ran 28:15 the next year in 2005, the day before he turned 19. At the time, I think that he was not competing for Oregon yet, but did so the next year.
Weird race, 8 people, 6 DNFs, second place was a 29yr old.
Obviously a setup race for Alex, but all that for a 14yr old?!
The only one who had more pacers/DNFs was Kipchoge in his 2hr run.
Maybe Alex will be the first to break 2!

I don't know where the list is, but the marks put up by Hulst, Chapa, and especially McChesney in the '75, '76 and '77 seasons in America are just breathtaking. Chapa's 28:32 is the one that most people know about, but McChesney had a 29:27 as a sophomore that portended his eventual 13:14 / 27:47 at a young age.
That is a 9:25 3200m times THREE as a true sophomore. When I read that as a young lad, I started to realize the difference between regular people and the people like Chapa, Virgin, McChesney, Ritz, etc.
Bill McChesney before being recruited by Oregon, ran around 29:20 at the Junior Olympics at 16 years old which is probably roughly equivalent, adjusting for age
I vaguely remember in the 80s about some kid --not sure if he was 14 or 15 --named Tracy Garrison who ran 30 and change for the 10 k. Probably still an American age group record I would imagine. You do hear occasional teen phenoms that seem to have a very bright future but later seem to disappear into oblivion.
I am sure Jakob Ingebretsin could have run in the 29 to 30 range at that age had he been so inclined based on his other age group performances
