It is 2019 and for some reason we still throw the javelin/discus/hammer on the infield.

False. Matthew Boling can run faster than any flying javelin. He’s basically usain bolt.
Medical workers sawed off a piece of the javelin that was sticking out of Goodwin’s back, the station reported. He was transported to a nearby hospital where the rest of the javelin was surgically removed by doctors.

ATHENS, Ga. -- A University of Georgia sprinter from Covington was impaled while he was running a drill Tuesday afternoon, according to the student’s mother.
Elija Godwin, who is a freshmen sprinter on the team, was doing a backwards sprint drill on the infield and accidentally backed into a javelin.
11Alive UGA Insider Radi Nabulsi learned about the incident earlier in the day.
A statement from university said the javelin was sticking out of the field at an angle.
It went through Elija's back and punctured his lung. He immediately went down and his teammates packed the area with gauze until he could be rushed to a hospital for emergency surgery, according to the police report.
Medical personnel had to saw off the piece sticking out of his back to get him into the ambulance, but the front piece of the javelin was still in his chest.

I did read the article. I meant what I said.
I've witnessed javelin throwers walking out to retrieve their spears, engaged in conversation with a teammate, walk into the back end of a javelin. Obviously not nearly as bad as this but it still did some damage.

"how can you live with no comprehension?" That is the pot calling the kettle black.

Georgia sprinter impales himself with javelin in horrific accident, undergoes surgery
Freshman Elija Godwin suffered a punctured and collapsed lung after falling on the throwing spear

An athlete at the University of Georgia was rushed to the hospital this week after accidentally getting impaled by a javelin.
According to a police report obtained by DawgNation.com, freshman Bulldogs sprinter Elija Godwin fell backward onto a javelin that was planted into the ground at the UGA track on Tuesday. It struck him just below his shoulder blade and left him with a punctured and collapsed lung. Upon arriving at the scene, rescue workers "grinded off" the part of the javelin that was sticking out of Goodwin.
He was rushed to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center after the javelin pierced him, per the Associated Press. The freshman is expected to make a full recovery and remains in stable condition following surgery to remove the piece that was inside of him.
"It was truly an accident," Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity told DawgNation.com. "Nobody threw anything or anything like that."
McGarity added thanks to the local authorities for assisting during the incident and helping Goodwin get to the hospital.
"We would like to express appreciation for all those who acted so quickly and efficiently in coming to the aid of Elija," Ron Courson, the school's director of sports medicine, said through a UGA statement on Wednesday. "Special thanks to our sports medicine staff, UGA Police Department, Athens-Clarke County Fire-Rescue, National EMS, and Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center."
My biggest track fear is getting hit by one of the throwing implements (whether it be shot/disc/javelin/hammer). Even just watching from a distance makes me fear for the officials standing out in the field or worrying about a javelin or disc thrower just slipping and launching a throw out into a crowd. This is probably irrational, but still scary and glad Godwin is making a full recovery and that this incident had absolutely nothing to do with my fear.
Godwin was Brooks PR Champion in High school last year and ran on Wold Jr 4 x4 Silver medal realay team for the USA last summer..
I don’t understand why javelin people store their javs by stabbing them into the ground at an angle. The risk of imaplkmg yourself would be eliminated of they stored them like vaulting poles.

Having seen an official killed by an implement a few years ago, I can assure you that your fear is NOT irrational.
Every one of the throws started out as a weapon, designed to kill people and other things. It's worthwhile to remind ourselves of that, frequently.
