I ran a 2:48 and feel fine

You're not beat up after running 47 minutes off world record time. It's some kinda miracle.

This sounds like a day dream. You're actually in the middle of the Hal Higdon Novice 1 plan and to entertain yourself during your 5 mile midweek long run (at an 11:00/mile pace), you're imagining race day and how you might be some natural runner who can suddenly pace himself at sub-3:00.

No it's definitely 2:48. I got a placement award. But it felt easy? It's not like I don't train.

Yeah I guess. It's not like I haven't raced before but just halfs and shorter. I don't know I thought running under 2:50 seemed like a reasonable goal. But I really didn't have the motivation to push myself. Just felt comfortable the whole way. I've run 43-44km in training before.

Btw I'm seriously not kidding. This did happen. Friends think I ran a great race I don't have the heat to tell them I gave it like 85%.

Correct, it's humblebragging. Saying "wtf is wrong with me" as if it's a complaint is humblebragging, or "complaining" about the awkwardness of your friends congratulating you.

I ran 1:20 half off 30mpw about 15 years after college running and had a similar feeling. Every college race hurt and was anaerobic, this was just a long run at a decent pace. I wish someone told me sooner that long races were more enjoyable than 1500-10k.

I could run a 2:36-2:40 marathon in training based on doing multiple 20-23 mile long runs at that pace as a normal run without a doing a workout. Race marathon would probably be around 2:15 based on half marathon times. Since you still probably ran a little harder than you're letting on (I doubt it was THAT easy since you were in a race environment trying a little bit) I'd say maybe you could run 2:35-2:40 if you tried again and maximized yourself that day with serious training for your buildup. I'm also assuming that your buildup wasn't that great because you didn't know what to expect from yourself. If you do a good buildup you probably know a good window of time that you will finish in. Window might be 10 minutes, but it's still a window.

It was actually a bit boring because there were no people around - small enough race to place well with that time. I basically ran at least the last 12k alone and the route was poor - the city did not block the park path that it was on so I had to dodge cyclists dog walkers etc. I really lost interest.

I know this all sounds silly but it's true. And yes the course is accurate - I've seen the certification so I'm not worried there.

Training was fairly good at an average of 55mpw over 18 weeks with a peak of 70.

If you can "jog" a 6:20 mile pace for a marathon, if you actually pushed yourself and put in the mileage, you will probably go sub 2:20.

I doubt there’s anything wrong with you. You’re probably just suited for longer distances. Try harder next time and you could probably run in the 2:30s. I will say the sensation of these longer races from a mid-distance background is just night and day. Every 800, 1500, and mile that I ran going for time felt supremely hard as far as breathing and maintaining pace. Whereas racing a marathon and half-marathon, while I have to worry about my legs not surviving as far as breathing and mentally keeping up it doesn’t feel like near the same struggle.
