He's done. Disappointing.
New 50 mile WR. Almost as disappointing as you are to your parents.
Uh...Jim is a 2:14 marathoner. Probably faster given his 64 minute half on like 8 weeks of training. Jeez you clowns really will say some stupid shi# on here.

So youre telling me that if you had a chance to get a world record, instead of going for it you would slog through another hour and a half of mediocrity to not set any records? I dont understand how people are criticizing him right now, a lot of people bonked in this race and it does him no good to give up the 50 mile record
I'm not criticizing Jim, that was an impressive run! I am disappointed that I don't get to see what he can do in the 100 km.
The only amateurs are the 10x10K world record. We could gather from this thread alone people that would break this record.
Maybe they had this event to focus on in case (like they have) nothing to talk about after the 50M?
Actually it's a worlds best over 50 miles. This is not an official distance.
Too bad that Jim is such a wuss. Now he walks it in. That's what he does best.

He just set the 50 mile world record how is that disappointing
Because the main thing advertised and aimed for was the 100Km, not a non event distance no one has attempted in anger for decades, set in a proper 'open' race to boot.
It was never on
I know I am sitting in the cold at a 24hr event with nothing to do, but lots of time wasted here.
Lets see if the other guy can still do it
The 50 mile attempt was well advertised as one of the main goals of the race. It was literally one of the reason they're doing this. What rock have you been hiding under?

He is not a 2:14 Marathoner. He might run a 2:14 with his HM time but that has to be seen.
I'm curious what I said about kipchoge. It's just way too hot I think for 6 hours . He wouldn't be motivated to go that long.
But would be interesting to just throw 10 sub 2:08 guys in this with no training and see how it goes. HOKA or some other company could do that for about $100,000. 20k guaranteed and I think some guys would give it a go

It should also be noted the 50 mile record is significantly harder to break than 100k. The 100k record has changed numerous times recently, while Bruce Fordyce's record held since 1983 (I believe). It is by far the greater achievement.
Maybe you’re trolling, but I’ll take the bait. The 100km is much more stout. Not only has it only changed a handful of times in a few decades, it’s actually been raced and contested many many many more times than the 50 mile. No 100km races take official 50 mile splits, and there haven’t been any competitive 50 mile road races since the 80s. It’s a tough record for sure, but the 100km is an international standard.
Yeah that 14:30 at states was sure a walk in. Like you could even move 50k.
When you see how relatively little success the South Africans have had at 100K, not much longer than Comrades, it’s no surprise that there is little crossover between marathons & ultras. Likewise 100K champions often struggle at Comrades.
Burney, please slow down the crack usage this morning. Do you honestly believe there is any other reason that Fordyce's record held for nearly 40 YEARS? it is shocking how dumb you are.

i dont really know what i expected coming on letsrun, but congrats to jim for doing something none of these clowns could even dream of
Hell, even one of their own, the founder of LetsRun, Weldon Johnson, is out there supporting the event. He knows this is a big deal. But it's easy to hide behind the computer and whine about people doing great things and enjoying their lives.
I'm purely disappointed that this 100k world record attempt felt short of what it was supposed to be. Is the 50 mile record cool? Absolutely. Was Jim's running and mental strength amazing? Absolutely. Was it the 100k WR chase that they advertised? Depends on if you consider starting the last 20km with a walk what was intended. I was just looking for him to break 6, as this was their main goal. Breaking the 50 mile otw to the 100k record was what, I believe, everyone was cheering for.

You'd see 10 guys run exponentially faster than the current world record.

NO ONE races 50 miles on a road. There are 100K world championships every two years (every year until recently), and runners have to qualify running 100K in their countries.

lol so this guy "runs" 50 miles but now literally has to walk a bunch for the record to count? what
Yeah... I mean, epic run to get the 50-mile record so major props to Jim. But honestly it's pretty weird. I don't follow ultras at all and thought I was tuning in for a 100km race. This is like Kipchoge setting the 25mi record in a marathon and then walking it in.
No one goes around saying Kipchoge was the first to break 2hrs for 26 miles, even though he did. Great run for Jim, but let's be real. If he sets the 50-mile record and then fades to just miss the 100k record, that's one thing. He's literally walking it in.
So what are we calling Comrades? It is the single most competitive ultra and is whatz 55 miles? Oh, I get it. That doesn't count.

Lol, I doubt most of the people commenting couldn't even finish a 10k, let alone break any kind of record.
