That's not the whole story with the SNHU selection debacle. Part of the blame goes to the Sport Committee who has the final say on the at-large selections. In the process of comparing two teams who were under consideration they errored when they should've selected Western Oregon.
In the selection process during a round of comparing teams under selection for the next at-large team admitted into the field the teams under consideration happened to be Western Oregon who was 6th in the West Region against the next team up from the other seven regions. Western Oregon was selected automatically over six of the other schools based on results, etc., used by the objective computer formula system, but Western Oregon had no common opponents with SNHU who was 4th in the East (other than Bentley who they both beat).
In the order of criteria listed to be used for at-large selections if that happens then and only then does the D2 XC Sport Committee make a subjective decision of which team to select. The eight member Sport Committee is made up of four athletic administrators and four coaches who represent the eight regions. Because SNHU had won their conference and was 4th in the East the administrators insisted that they were a more worthy selection than Western Oregon who was 6th in the West and 4th in GNAC regardless of the fact that the GNAC was a very good conference (1st, 2nd an 3rd place had already been selected for the meet from their conference) and the West Region was probably the second deepest region behind the South-Central Region. Of course the coaches knew that Western Oregon was the better team (just look at the results from the Lewis meet and who they beat including Southern Indiana who was selected as an at-large team). In the eyes of the administrators though they think xc is like other sports where a conference champion should get selected for post-season. When in xc that really doesn't mean anything because a conference could be weaker.
All that to say SNHU should not have been selected over Western Oregon and the national results showed that. The Sport Committee knows that they made a mistake and hopefully they do it right next time. Nothing against SNHU but the when you have almost 300 teams and only 10 are selected at-large then those 10 should be pretty good teams.
