How do you fish specifically for trout? Can't another kind of fish come along and seize the bait instead, and then you caught something else. So aren't you just generally fishing then?
fishing for something implies intent.
bait choice, trolling speed, depth, time of day, location on lake, time of year, all have an impact on what you catch and allow you to target certain species, with varying degrees of success.
Most importantly, different bodies of water are known for different species, either through natural selection or artificial stocking. If one is fishing for halibut, one would probably not go to a trout lake.
Or, like you say, just drop a hook down. It's all the same.
