Really nothing special but OK
For fitness, it’s excellent.
For competition, it’s slightly above average.
You seem to have some talent so keep working hard. The fact you ran that sort of time after running two longer races shows you have some decent strength for your age. If you want to know how to improve you need to speak with your coach.
It's really good. Don't let letsrun tell you any different. Most kids are well over 60 flat. You're off to a great start, but it's what you do after this that counts!
Yes that's good!!! Just keep at it and you'll improve on that time a lot! Don't let anybody else tell you otherwise.
Just increase you ability to run that a extra 400m every year for the next three years and you'll be the top ranked American miler.
Yes, it is a fast time. I was just scanning through the results of a big youth meet I had considered taking my team to. I don't recall anything better than 52 at the meet, but nothing close to 56 for that age group.
Oops, I misread this as an 8 year old. 8 and under AAU boys record is 1:02, the girls is 1:06. The 4x100m boys record is only 56. The 9-10 boys and girls records are 58.xx. The 11-12 boys record is 50! while the girls record is 54.
But you're talking about 8th grade, which would be 13-14 years old, where way under 50 would be the record, maybe 48-49. So, 56.80 would be probably a solid time, nothing really special, but a 56.8 kid in 8th grade might expect to run as good as 49.9-51 in high school.
Here we go: Boys 13-14 record is a doozy.
400 m 47.16 William Obea Moore Baton Rouge, LA 1993-Aug-01
Depending on how physically mature the kid is, 56.8 for 8th grade is great. On average, I would estimate a boy who runs 56.x in 8th grade will go on to run 50.0 or a little faster by senior year, but it can vary a lot. I've learned over time to not worry too much about projections into the long term future and instead take it season by season and enjoy the present. Best way to improve is to train consistently (not necessarily year-round; it's good to give the mind and body a break between seasons), STAY HEALTHY (don't get injured), eat decently healthy, and avoid stupid stuff like drugs and alcohol (seriously).
Congrats on the time. You should feel good about it, especially if it was after another race like you said.
Yes this is a pretty good time for 8th grade. It also indicates you might be able to run some good times at distances above 400m.
Some of the super fast times run at young ages are due to early developers, and many don’t improve linearly.
Good luck
Love the troll posts that come out during track season. LMGTFY! No 8th grade student ventures onto Letsrun and poses such a rhetorical question.
i know it may seem crazy but im in the 8th grade and go on letsrun its not that unreasonable.
sure, it's a good time for a future distance runner who's never raced the 400m before. What were you splits, how badly did you tie up in the last 100m? Typically people aim to slow down 1-2 seconds the second 200m.
Yes, that's very good for an 8th grader. I was a D1 all American and didnt run that fast until I was a freshman in hs.
It's only a good time if you keep running as a 9th grader, 10th grader, 11th grader, and 12th grader and see how far you can get. 8th grade times mean nothing if the person ends up quitting and hating the sport.

2/10
my ending is actually where i closed that gap between me and the guys and 2nd an 3rd and beat them so i would say i did the end fairly well. my splits were probably around 27 for the first 200 and 29 for the second 200 but i cant be sure.
i actually am more of a miler and distance guy though this is also my first year running the mile. i ran a 5:11 at this meet and this is my second time ever running it in a meet im hoping to go sub 5 by the end of track.
