To preface my question, allow me to acknowledge my awareness of the fact that many people on this message board don't give a rat's rump about ball sports. With that in mind, please focus on the issue of fairness and accuracy rather than the sport itself. (That said, the opinion of knowledgeable baseball fans will be especially helpful.)
So...my kid is a high school baseball player, and a dad of a player volunteers to run the GameChanger app (scorebook). In one of my kid's at-bats yesterday, he laid down a perfect bunt with runners on 1st and 2nd base. The pitcher fielded the ball but had no play, so the runners advanced and my kid made it safely to first base.
When I looked at the GameChanger app, the dad/scorekeeper had ruled the play a fielder's choice instead of a hit. In reality, it could not have been a fielder's choice because the defender did not attempt to throw out a runner at any other base. It was not an error because the ball was fielded cleanly. Quite, simply, it was a well-place bunt and the defense had no play. Therefore, it was a hit and should have been scored as such.
I can see how this might seem petty and whiny, but would I be out of line if I approached the dad today and respectfully asked him to correct the mistake? (Bear in mind that I politely asked him yesterday why it was scored a fielder's choice, and he didn't really have an answer.) If it was clearly a judgment call - like whether a line drive off the glove of a defender is a hit or error - I would not be asking about this. But under the circumstances, it was scored incorrectly and that one instance cost my kid 32 points on his batting average. Coaches look at the stats, so I want my kid to get credit when it's due to him.
So, again, would I be justified in bringing this up to the dad/scorekeeper in a respectful manner, or should I just drop it? Thanks.
