My 16 year old son was in his second track season this spring when his left iliac crest began bothering him. He tried to run through it for a few weeks until he competed in a 3000 meter that left him limping for a few days. I took him to an orthopedic who did X-rays and diagnosed him with iliac apophysitis. His recommendation was off all activity for 2 weeks and cross training for 2 weeks before slowly returning to running. My son is almost to 5 weeks off and has been doing the elliptical and pool running for almost 3 weeks along with some glut/hamstring/core strengthening a PT friend recommended. My son is very anxious to return to running but is also scared of the pain returning. I am looking for recommendations on how long athletes had to take off with this diagnosis, if they were able to return to running/competing pain free, and how they went about returning to running and progressing their training to prevent reoccurrence.
