The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) 'governs' all high school athletics in the state. For track athletes, all this really means is that the MIAA can sanction you and your school, and controls state championship meets. They have no further involvement in the sport or its competitions.
Most meets are put on by the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association (MSTCA), basically a group of coaches who have been doing this work on a volunteer basis for years.
After the MIAA announced plans to hike rates at upcoming state championship meets, the MSTCA announced they'd put on their own championship meets, setting up a situation where there could be dueling championships in the state. It's an interesting situation and could pit coaches against their Athletic Directors, who may fear retaliation from the MIAA, who have a lot of leverage in other sports.
Personal opinion: The MIAA always swoops in at the end of the season to collect fees for the championship meets, while the MSTCA does the hard work of putting on meets year-round. If the MIAA is worried about "losing money" on their championship meets, then they should welcome the MSTCA's willingness to take them off their hands. Unfortunately, it seems like money and pettiness are the MIAA's primary concern, but I'm interested if folks on the boards have other opinions or insights into the situation.
