robert,
The at-large teams are a consolation to the coaches who want that last ditch, wing on a prayer, sweat some blood chance to make it to nationals, which in the long run means that they will probably finish in the 31st, 32nd,and 33rd spot at nationals. This satisfies the need for these coaches to be able say "WE MADE IT TO NATIONALS!" Of course you could have put any other 3 teams in there and they would finish in the same spots. Yes they get to put it in their media guide...? Basically, those bids mean nothing, sorry. The seeded race at pre-nats is fine, if you are going, if not you have to rely on the blocker rule mess, making it possible for teams to go who finished behind a team who did well when it counted/and who were more ready closer to the National Meet! Doesn't that strike you as being a little out of whack? Even in the current system we have this situation were coaches just want to be able to say they made it, hence the "one time blocker rule," which basically says "no we were not ready when it counted, and no we didn't get the job done, and yes this other team beat us, but we think we should still get to go, because we were ready four weeks ago." That doesn't register as kind of messed up. That to me is what the blocker rule represents, it rewards mediocrity.
