I had my wisdom teeth removed years ago and it was truly agony after the procedure until I was given strong painkillers. I now have to have a molar extracted. Will this be as painful (after the procedure) as a wisdom tooth or is it far less painful?

I'm not dentist but my guess is no. I read once that how painful it is having your wisdom teeth removed largely comes down to whether or not they ever grew n properly. If they didn't grow in, your gums need to be cut open and the teath dug out. If they did come in, they just freeze your mouth and yank em with plyers. Mine had grown in at the time they were removed and it wasn't bad at all. Your molars are most likely grown in now too so i would think that it would hurt less.
I've had five molars extracted and replaced with titanium implants and I never took any pain meds once the original local anesthetic wore off. The pain was no more than mild for any of them. But then again, I had all four of my wisdom teeth extracted long ago and those were only mildly painful as well.
