I have a calcified insertion. Pain increased over a few years where I thought it was manageable, but for the past 6 months I've had to completely give up running. I am having surgery in June. They'll remove the calcified insertion, pare away extra bone, lengthen the Achilles to calf attachment, then reattach. I'll be in a cast for 2 weeks, boot for a few months, gradually regaining dorsaflexion at physical therapy.
The surgeon claims it is basically a reset.
What is the experience of people who have had this surgery, or medical professionals with experience in this?
My background: distance runner through college. Trained for decathlon for four years after college. Then hung up the spikes and switched to hobby jogging maybe 20mpw, some biking, some swimming, and ironically that is when the pain began. I'm now 34 years old.
Will I really be able to train after surgery? I'd settle for going back to some easy running, maybe jump into some pole vault, swim a bit. I have no interest in renewing hard training.
Long term prognosis? If this issue returns 20 or 30 years from now, is there any hope of a successful second surgery?
