I'm soon having surgery for a labrum tear - they are planning on shaving down the bone as well as fixing the tear. Anyone have experience with this and getting back to running?

I’ve seen a few of them. Can’t do a lot immediately after but do the physical therapy and usually see people running 4+ months after surgery. Patience is key
I had the surgery in Feb 2018, oddly enough, my fiance had the surgery in May 2017. (guess I was just jealous?) Both surgeries went well (same Dr. at HSS in NYC) and recoveries pretty smoothly although very different timelines...
For me:
-Was able to start running on the Alter-G at 12 weeks (slow build up. 4x 3' @ 60% up to 5x 5' @ 90% both with walk breaks
-Started similar process outside at around 17 weeks
-Continued 1-2 runs a week on the Alter-G through summer while building mileage
-Able to incorporate tempo work by late summer
-Ran NYC marathon slowly 8.5 months post surgery
-Normal build up to Tokyo marathon this past March (fastest time in several years)
For her:
-Wasn't able to start running until ~5 months post op on treadmill (no use of Alter-G)
-Slow build up to double digit mileage runs by 9 months
-Added speed workouts around 10 months
-Within 1 minute of half marathon PR almost one year to the day (~1:27)
-Full build up to NYC marathon with PR at ~18 months
So from our limited sample size, while your PT will have a plan, depending on how you are feeling it may take a shorter or longer amount of time, it doesn't mean the surgery didn't work.
Theraband and strength work (glutes, core, etc) will be your friend for the rest of your time running.
If you have access to an Alter-G take advantage of it as you build back up.
Build back smartly. Definitely times where I could tell I was pushing to do too much and had to back off.
Good luck!

who did you have for your surgeon? I will also be going to HSS
Dr. Nawabi.
I did PT at HSS as well.
I had the same thing done in late December. In my experience you'll feel it for a long time but it won't be nearly as bad as before. I started walk/jogging at 3 months and have built up to 20 minutes of running so far and will hopefully be up to fairly normal mileage (80-90) by the fall. I still feel it (no "pain" though), but I was told it wouldn't be perfect yet and have a while until it should. Do your rehab, PT, and take care of yourself. You'll be fine.
