Yes, why didn't he do that in Rio?
He may have, and he certainly could have in top shape. Likely could have broken 2:04 if he’d been time-trialing it with some pacing help. Conditions weren’t perfect like when G. Mutai & M. Mosop ran 2:03-low on this course, but they were fair, as evidenced by Ward & Fauble’s big PRs.
For Fauble & Ward, the race did play out as a well paced time trial. Fauble ran 64:41/64:28; Ward ran 64:31/64:54. For a guy like Cherono, the racing didn’t start until about mile 21. Cherono ran the last 5.2mi. @ 2:01:40 avg. marathon pace. I’m certain he could have run 2:05 in today’s race if it had been his objective.
Cherono is ranked #2 in the world by IAAF, and I’d say that’s fair, with Farah probably #3. You’d still have to give Fauble a 1500m head start over Cherono to see an interesting conclusion.
Farah is third? I didn't know.

This makes sense.
I knew there were at least two Ethiopians who were better (or are placed higher) than Farah. I was just not in the mood of looking it up.
Thanks Hardloper.

Yeah but anyone with their finger on the beat knows better than to entirely believe the IAAF ranking system.
The four Ethiopians ranked ahead of Farah by IAAF are:
3. Leule Gebrsellassie
4. Mosinet Geremew
5. Tola Shura Kitata
6. Birhanu Legese
Kitata is the only one who’s beaten Farah, at London last year. They’ll face off again in 12 days. I could see ranking Kitata above Farah, though I give Farah a slight advantage on their fall marathons, for getting a win.
Leule Gebrsellassie ran two 2:04s in super fast races last year, but has never run a world marathon major.
Mosinet Geremew beat L. Gebrsellassie to win in Dubai in 2018, and then lost to Farah in Chicago.
Birhanu Legese was 6th in Dubai last year behind the above two and 10th at Chicago, 3:30 behind Farah, before getting a nice sub-2:05 win in a fairly weak Tokyo field.
I would rank Farah #3 in the world. And ranking things is my scene, baby.
Mo Farah is the 2nd best marathoner in the world rite now
