Dudes fourth marathon of the year(according to wiki). Previous three went:
2019 Ibusuki Nanohana Marathon Ibusuki, Japan 1st Marathon 2:14:21
2019 Shizuoka Marathon Shizuoka, Japan 1st Marathon 2:13:41
2019 Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon Ōtsu, Japan 8th Marathon 2:09:21
Let me see you do that.
Why would a pro runner do that? Focus on the main event. A defending champ should not burn himself out with that 2:09 last month! The quantity thing isn't impressive anymore.
He turned Pro and Boston was his first experience with '"overtime"

For you maybe, besides the hard 30k marathon tempo runs elites do, are they really any different from just running a marathon? Can't remember which US marathoner from the 70s/80s said it, but he said something along the lines that most people can run at least half a dozen good marathons a year. Maybe HRE know who I'm talking about. But seriously, he just went pro. Wait my child and expect great things.

So he sabotaged his goal marathon one last time before turning pro? He did bad training one last time before getting serious as a pro? Makes no sense.
You can't recover from a 2:09 in one month. If he ran 2:19 in March, no issue. But 2:09! What was he thinking?

Obviously Boston was not his goal marathon.

You are right. As soon as he turned pro that quantity thing ceases to be relevant. His fans expected more from him, and I bet his sponsors too. Interesting someone beat me to the "Yuki goes home DEVASTATED" :D
Everyone knows last year was a fluke.

You sound like Banana Bread and his posts about Bekele.
Americans run 2:09 finally: "Yay! America is back!"
Kawauchi runs 200th 2:09 a month ago: "Boo! Yuki is done!"

He was the defending champion, that would make it the TOP priority. If that was his mentality, oh well oh well.
2018 was an upset, not a "fluke."
"Racing" means showing up healthy and ready to roll in whatever conditions may present. Yuki executed a brilliant strategy in 2018 and dominated. No need to diminish his performance.
As to this year, he ran a valiant race and was one of the top clean finishers. He should be proud. I do think he should race less.

He had zero chance of winning this year, which would make not his top priority.

Ahhh yes....the "You can't critique something you can't physically do" argument. Classic defense mechanism when butthurt.

You should look at what Kjell-Erik Ståhl did before he was 4th in the 1983 WC (narrowly outsprinted by drug cheat Cierpinski):

I think Yuki had a bad patch in the race yesterday, given that he finished the last couple of miles so fast. Unless he discusses it we will never know, that could have cost him a few minutes. He could have been in the 2:12-2:13 range what would have been typical for him. In any case he has 4 sub 2:20s already this year and that is awesome.

While he beat Ritz, who does the more traditional build up.

Just wanted to ad: 92 marathons, 88 sub 2:20s, 21 sub 2:11's, 13 sub 2:10s.............Yuki is fun to follow and root for.
