"I know I’m being foolish to leave the refunds on the table". If you've never done your taxes, how would you know you are getting a refund?
Nice try, liar.

I’m 26 years old and have never done my taxes. I earn $33k/year. My girlfriend is convinced that if I continue to blow off my taxes every year I will incur some terrible penalty, likely going to prison. She claims that “everybody does their taxes,” and is incredulous that I could be so nonchalant about skipping it. I know I’m being foolish to leave the refunds on the table, but am I putting myself in serious jeopardy?
Thank you, LetsRun.
As others have said, you are a fool to leave those refunds on the table. You should be able to file the 1040 EZ, and that would take you all of about 10 minutes or so to do.
You can still incur fines, and as you make more and more, and if you would have to pay some at the end of the year, you would risk prison for tax evasion.
If I were your girlfriend, this would be a red flag. You are proving to be irresponsible. Women don't want irresponsible.
I don't know much about the tax code and do not hold an LLM in taxation from the NYU School of Law. Nor do I want to judge you for what has already happened while you come here vulnerably to ask about the experiences of others. However, I wonder what, if anything, in your life has made you disregard responsibilities such as this. I presume, perhaps mistakenly, that if you let this slide, other parts of your life suffered similar suboptimal treatment. Is there, underneath it all, a looming fear? Maybe I am wrong, and you are well, but look at your life and ask yourself all of the usual Dostoevsky-esque questions about existence and its meaning one asks at times like these. Or don't.

False. The give away was that he said he has a girlfriend.
Why don't you just do your taxes? At your earnings, it takes less than an hour. 1040EZ. No expenses. Nothing.
You're not going to prison.
Honestly the IRS should prepare everyone's tax returns for them and send them a file bey Feb 15 to review for changes.
If you don't respond with changes by April 1, they send you a refund or a bill due April 15.
Or you can opt to file your own.

What would seem to hang you up is - how would they know that you don't actually owe taxes unless you file the returns? SO, without a tax return, for all they know you may owe, and if you do, you would be responsible for payment, a fine, and interest on the amount owed.
They know because every W-2 and 1099 you get the IRS gets to. Unless he is making his money as a business, which I doubt, the IRS knows who to go after.
I promise you, you WILL go to prison at some point in your life...FEDERAL prison...if you do not "voluntarily" comply. You have no idea who you are fooling with, and believe me, you do NOT want the Feds on your a$$. Once they get their hooks into you, you are sunk. You will do time, and your records will be kept by the Bureau of Prisons for 30 years after you complete your time. You a$$ will be theirs for the rest of your life.
1040EZ and 1040A are no longer being used.
No, you will not go to jail. And no, you will not owe penalties. Penalties are always computed as a percentage of the taxes you owe. So as long as you don't owe, you can't be fined.
Disregard the hysterics here and file if you want to file. I do agree with those who say that it shouldn't take you more than a few minutes to file and get your refund, but it's your call!

Poor people, especially ppl of color, never file, but no worries, IRS cant get blood from a stone. The exception is actor Wesley Snipes who got three years in prison and also lost $$$ millions by never filing returns while making millions.
Of course, if you dont file you'll never get a home mortgage and pay the highest rate on a car loan.
I know hundreds, maybe thousands of people of color. We all pay our taxes. The only people who complain about paying taxes are middle class white people.

Seriously 15 seconds of Google time was all it took me to verify that you are wrong. There is a minimum penalty of $205. Presumably that is for each year you dont file. So even if he is owed a refund, he will still lose out on $205 of each of those refunds.
I assume (but dont know) that if you get flagged for not filing your returns and then refuse to go through the process of rectifying that, then you could face jail time. My assumption is that you would have to ignore multiple rounds of the IRS attempting to get you to pay your taxes.

Yeah I thought this was 2019. Thanks for affirming. ; )
Better hope this girlfriend wants to dump you and you don’t dump her, because the IRS lets people anonymously throw tax dodgers under the bus. Seems like a pretty slick way to stab you in the back later.
Here are the answers. Yes, you can go to jail for not filing.
You only go to jail if you owe the IRS money. If youre are a single, full time, worker, the IRS owes you money. Probably about 700$ for your income. So you can get 700$ for doing less than a hour of work, or blow it off...your choice.

You just stole the words out of my mouth!
They'll give you a chance to pay back what you owe. I know someone who didn't file for YEARS. He came clean and they had him pay.
Better to get some money than pay for you in prison.
You will be caught and forced to pay more that you rightfully owe (if you're lucky). I had a friend who made less than 20K per year in a major city. He paid his taxes every year despite living a sparse existence in poverty. The IRS actually audited him. It was pathetic.

Far out man! Existential. Why not connect it to the inevitability of "death and taxes"?
Ergo, avoiding taxes is a psychological way of negating death.
