Deke overall for the DECADE. Lopes great for two years. Same for Jones. Two years is not ten though. If they lined up and ran one race for all the marbles I pick Lopes but that's not what the OP asked.

Jonesey for me. Running 2:07 off a 61 first half split says it all.
Stick him in a paced race in Berlin with Vaporflys and his talent would still be competitive today.
Son't forget the rabbits.

Agreed.
Deek was 10th at Moscow in 80, and ran a 2:09 to win Rotterdam in 1991. He was there the entire decade, which was the question.

100% correct

DEEKA is coming to Boston this year!!! YAY!
In what capacity? I don't see Rob De Castella in the 2019 entrants. Is he going to be at the fair?

1991 was not in the 80s

You could make an argument for Jones and Deek but Lopes showed he was better than both. Deek certainly started the decade with an edge but by the time the other two joined him they surpassed him.
Lopes
Jones
Deek
definitely any of these 3 but Lopes Olympic title puts him over the top -super impressive considering that he was the silver medalist in the 10000 m in Montreal...
any of them would have been competitive in today's marathons given technology, pacing etc...
Not only that but considering his age too. That same year, '84 when he won gold in hot and sweaty LA, he ran the 10k in 27:17.48. A monster for his age!
Lopes also won world XC twice. We just spent the last two weeks raving about world xc remember!
Seko is best by far.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toshihiko_Seko
lopez was ripped off on the track by reindeer juicing viren, and probably had to do a little doping himself. cudos to him.
deek was too short lived as was al sal, as was jones.
seko was a marathoner through and through.
plus more major wins .. many more major wins than anyone.
Seko it is
He's up there with the top 5 guys all time.

that is a 28 minutes flat plus a 29 x late 10k back to back.
yo, with out pacing, (not really sure) probably.
seko reported to have 150 800m in high school.....
My impression from talking to some people familiar with him (back in 83) was he was capable of being Japans No1 800/1500 runer. He was directed into the longer events because they thought he would only be maybe a 1.48/3.38 runner. It was also thought he had untapped 5/10 potential. He was a mad little bugger in training as were many of the Japanese of that era. He seemed to be doing pretty huge volume (over 1000kms per month) and some very long runs. Several of the Japanese of the 80s seemed to like solid 5-8hr runs and he was one of them.i think you are right. i remember he went to the university of southern california as a 1:51 800 runner but had a miserable time adjusting and went home after his freshman year. if i find it in my files i'll post where i read it.
Toshihiko Seko? was he really fast? 6/12/2008 10:35AM - in reply to no one knows me

I saw a 5000 at Crystal Palace (in the mid 1980s) and he completely annihilated Wilson Waigwa at the end of a 5K. So, his ability to close was not only limited to the marathon distance. I want to say his last 200 was high 27....last lap in 56 or 57.
Japanese junior record holder 800 and 1500 m (3:53). 27:51 10000 m.

Lopes' range is unmatched. He was 2nd best all time in 10000m, the best at XC and the WR in the marathon.
If Lopes concentrated on the marathon earlier he could have won a lot more.
I think Lopes only really trained properly for the OG and Rotterdam 1985.

Correction - Lopes won World XC 3 times (76, 84, 85).

He was also runner up twice and even had other finishes well back in the field and even dropping out.
Amazing he could rebound completely and go out on top 20 years after he first ran the junior race.
All other former top guys were well down the field in their last appearances at the event.
Deeeeeeeeeeeeeek!
