traditionally, the best legitimate performance in a championship is awarded a record. in Britain we would call this the Championship Best Performance (CBP) while in the US it is often called the Meet Record (MR). to me, the name Championship Best Performance implies that the event has to have been in the Championship itself, one of the Championship events rather than an invitational or "extra" event of some sort. you may disagree.
in the 1932 NCAA Championship in Chicago Glenn Cunningham (Kansas) won the mile in 4:11.1 which was an American Record, and obviously a meet record, the previous meet record having been put up by Ray Putnam (Iowa State) at 4:17.0 the previous year.
Cunningham was also timed at 1500m and at that distance he also set an American Record 3:53.1
so my question is: bearing in mind that the 1500m was not a championship event that year, in your opinion was his 1500m time also a meet record? a few words to explain your answer would be appreciated.
cheers.
