Sage how can you expect to run a marathon fast if you train for hilly trail races? Its that simple
Correct. Finally someone with a brain.
Sage trains for what earns him a living - ultras. If he focused specifically on the road, he would not be making as good of a living. Best case, he would maybe be another nameless 2:12-2:14 guy. We here at LRC would know him, but no one would. Instead, he has found his place in the scene.
Due to his ultra training, his current marathon ceiling is probably “only” 2:20-2:21. Despite this, he keeps fighting for a meaningful goal - the OTQ. He came through at 1:09:30 and paid the price in the form of a couple minutes. He could have probably gone out in 1:10:30 and come back even or slightly negative. What would be the fun in that though? That is not what he wants. No PR, no OTQ.
As someone who actually puts in the work required to run “sub-elite” marathon times, I respect the hell out of Sage. I imagine most dudes who are really out there grinding do. Keep it up, Sage! LRC is behind you for the most part. The asshats just happen to be the loudest.
