I read it as he was a high mileage guy early in his career and trained very smart so that he’s already got a lot out of his development . He knew his latest half meant that the full would be super tough to hit

You can't preform at your max potential, unless you eat steak.

I really don't know if people are writing horrible things because they think it's funny, or if they really think them. Either way, I'd just like to say that Sage Canaday is open and honest about his goals and picks himself up and moves on when he doesn't hit them and makes a living out of doing it. Everyone on this board would swap their life for what he's got.
Go Sage.
Yes , true. He does not have elite running talent . Compare him to a AA baseball player that will never make the majors , but loves the sport. I would not swap my life for his level of talent though.

lol
Diet of the top African runners = indigenous, ancient, local. Beef, milk, plants, grains. Balanced.
Sage's diet = white, first-world, capitalist, imported, pesticide-laden. Unbalanced and heavily inflammatory. "Supplemented" with factory-made pills to replace "lost" nutrients that could have easily been found in animal food sources. Complete lack of vitamins A, D, B12, iron, omega 3s.
Just a total disaster. He's going to end up seriously sick and injured. And it's too late for him to ever run fast.
there have been marathoners running sub 2:10 on fast food . all the USA team should eat like kenyan farmers then?
Go and become a fan boy of spcecift diets then .
Paleo, Keto, high Meat, High Carbs, Vegan, etc keep it you yourself idiots you look like cult followers.
Fact is his training is nor that high of a milage, and not marathon specific.
No improvement...... wrote:

Brilliant excerpt from Arthur. I'm not sure my respect for him can be any greater, but his insight is certainly relevant even 50 years later.

Exactly. He ate “pro-inflammatory” carbs (burger & fries) before his race - but it’s “Vegan” so “must be healthy”. What a joke. Eats tons of sugar, flour, and pro-inflammatory carbs while missing out on essential fats and B-Vitamins - and it’s been proven vitamin supplements are useless.
Sage how can you expect to run a marathon fast if you train for hilly trail races? Its that simple

Correct. Finally someone with a brain.
Sage trains for what earns him a living - ultras. If he focused specifically on the road, he would not be making as good of a living. Best case, he would maybe be another nameless 2:12-2:14 guy. We here at LRC would know him, but no one would. Instead, he has found his place in the scene.
Due to his ultra training, his current marathon ceiling is probably “only” 2:20-2:21. Despite this, he keeps fighting for a meaningful goal - the OTQ. He came through at 1:09:30 and paid the price in the form of a couple minutes. He could have probably gone out in 1:10:30 and come back even or slightly negative. What would be the fun in that though? That is not what he wants. No PR, no OTQ.
As someone who actually puts in the work required to run “sub-elite” marathon times, I respect the hell out of Sage. I imagine most dudes who are really out there grinding do. Keep it up, Sage! LRC is behind you for the most part. The asshats just happen to be the loudest.

I'm not buying into his vegan nonsense anymore
Nice tangent but he's not vegan.
Lol at the clown that compared him to a AA baseball player. You do understand he is a professional runner sponsored by Hoka and other companies such as Ultimate Direction? Remind me how many AA baseball players have sponsors?

According to him:

Japan knows what to eat to run a fast marathon:
http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum9/HTML/001362.shtmlIf you do all this catabolic damage to your muscles via high mileage and don't give it the necessary nutrients to recover. You will just brake down and decline. Like we see happening with sage.

“Sponsored” in ultras is the equivalent to the G-League in the NBA ... You “feel good” while you are doing it but compare to actual pros - you know where you stand.
Being a sponsored ultrarunner is a glorified circle jerk. Feels good to be a part of it and to be watched, but doesn’t get you anywhere.
For sure. Sage opens himself up with a lot of stances, but I genuinely believe he's great for the sport of running. The fact that 2:23 is laughed at, is quite ironic. He has another decade of solid ultra running, and I'd bet to say at 40, he'll still drop a sub 2:30 in the marathon.
Best of luck at Comrades.
My friend played AA/AAA baseball and made in the $ 6 figures . Sitting on the bench in the majors , you are making 2-3 million a year. fyi Company "Ultimate Direction " had sales less than 3 million last year, and employs 2 full till employees .
What people do not understand about Sage his training. If you watch his training he has said multiple times that he is a sponsored ultra marathoner. This race was not that important to him. I don't think he sounded sad the night before but realistic. He knew that sub 2:19 was probably not possible.
